As a rule of thumb on how I live my life, I generally try to avoid being stupid (sometimes it happens but I do my best to avoid it). And I would argue that paying $19 in transaction fees to make a payment of $20 is pretty stupid for businesses to accept BTC as a payment method. I have tried to ask myself, "What if I am wrong? What if paying high fees is what people and businesses want?" and then I read about businesses that are forced to shut down due to high transaction fees and seems like common sense prevailed. Unfortunately, common sense is pretty uncommon these days in the crypto space.

I think high fees are tolerated for the sake of brand recognition, supreme hashpower and an unchanging/predictable protocol. It's getting to the point where BTC will only be useful for large settlement between banks, nations, etc. It's not what Satoshi intended, but it's where we are for now.
