What do you usually feel when your work, personality or attitude is being criticized? Do you feel sadness, happiness or anger? When we hear the word criticism, we usually think about it negatively, we are usually offended. But there is a kind of criticism that is helping us to improve our work and selves. That criticism is called constructive criticism.

Constructive criticism is defined in Business Terms as a way of providing feedback in both positive and negative sides. The negatives are not the focus, instead it is considered as areas that can be improved. Constructive criticism is a form of positive feedback rather than a negative one.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

At the moment, we have been so busy with some paper works and compliance for the universityhood of our institution. I am assigned to create a presentation of the IT program. I have prepared a powerpoint presentation, I know it's not perfect but when they call our program, I presented even if it's not yet complete to get their feedback. I actually subject myself to constructive criticism that time. In the presentation, almost all of my slides have feedback, it's far from the ideal presentation needed from us. Did I complain? Feel down about it? NO, I accepted all of those criticisms positively for me to improve the presentation. There I have realized that I have some missed points and I should add more to make my presentation better.

BENEFITS OF CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

Based on my experience I would like to share with you the benefits of constructive criticism.

  • Getting an outright feedback of your work. When you present you work, you can right away get the positive and negative feedbacks. Take note of all those feedbacks to become a guide of the revision that you are going to make.

  • Getting the chance to clarify on something. In presenting your work, through the feedbacks, you can clarify which points are lacking, not on the right track and etc. You can also give questions outright.

  • Getting suggestions on how to improve your work. In constructive criticism, once you get the feedbacks, they will give you at the same time the suggestions on how to improve your work. Welcoming those suggestions might be so overwhelming, you might also evaluate which fits the work best.

  • Improving your personality. Through the process, you improved your personality, you improve on how to positively react on both positive and negative feedbacks. You can gain confidence on presenting your work.

So having those benefits, how are we going to react on the constructive criticisms?

  • Accept criticisms positively. This might be difficult, but remember always the benefits that you can get, out of the feedbacks. The positive attitude can be seen in posture, facial expressions and manner of presentation.

  • Listen for you to understand. Take time to listen to the feedbacks and take note of them.

  • Ask questions and suggestions. If you have questions regarding the feedbacks, ask right away so that they can provide you answer. Since they have comments, they might have an idea on how to make it better so ask for suggestions.

  • Say thank you. Saying thank you is an acknowledgement of the feedbacks given but then again, you need not to agree on all, you can still evaluate which of the suggestions can fit you well.

CONLUSION

Constructive criticism is a kind of feedbacking mechanism that one should take positively. It can give a room for improvement. One can experience it anywhere, it can be in the office, school, house, community, church and even here in read. What matters most is ones response to this kind of criticism.

So true. sometimes we don't realize that only when we are criticized that we actually get to improve ourselves.

I agree with you. It is because criticism is always associated with the negative attitude of being upset. We need to improve and welcome criticisms and take time to examine ourselves.
