How many changed robes you need for a day for the many roles you have in your life? All of us I believe, shared this same story of changing robes a day. Like a theater performer,  I change robes many times for the multiple roles I have for a day. A wife,  a mother,  a faculty,  a department head,  a student, a researcher,  an extensionist,  an online seller,  a journal enthusiast,  a writer, a Bitcoin cash learner, a friend, a daughter -these are just some of the multiple roles I juggle.  And I say,  having multiple roles is not easy, there are conflicts and pressures that may even result to stress. With these, I have to do trade offs at times.

Coping up with multiple roles needs a strategy, though strategies are not also perfect, but some have tried them including me.

Tips in managing multiple roles

  • List all your roles and identify the responsibilities/activities. Get a paper, list all your roles and identify what are your activities for that role.  It is better to lay them all down in paper, rather than putting them in mind only, it will add to things running in mind.

  • Prioritize the activities for the roles you have. Once you have created the list,  you can now prioritize which of the activities should be done first,  second and so forth.  This one could be a priority guide, God First-Family Second-Work Third. Take note of the activities that needs output of the other activity before it can proceed. Remember always that your body is just one and you cannot do it all. So identifying which are the most important ones would be very helpful.

  • Identify roles that are related.  There are roles that are related with each other, you may categorize them together for you to strategize of handling them that they seem to work together. Just like, I write here in read.cash my experiences in my work and extension activities.

  • Delegate activities if you can. Once activities are identified, you can also identify which activities can be delegated to others. Remember always that the work can be lighter when there are people who work with you. It's not a loss to seek help from other people.

  • Focus on one role at a time. When you are in a play,  you cannot act on multiple roles at the same time. So when it comes to your real life roles, focus on that role on the list and perform it well before you proceed to the another one. Give time in doing it. Me for an instance, chose to write in dawn because my kids are not yet awake, at 6:00 A.M.I do wife and mom duties. 8:00-5:00 will be about work related activities. Focusing and ticking each activity done is more rewarding rather than just making a start comment.

With these tips, I will add some activities and attitudes that you can do to possibly manage the stress of the multiple roles.

  • Acceptance of your multiple roles. In a theater play, you will be given the role, you have a choice of accepting it or not. Once you accept it you will internalize the role given to you and that's the only way you can perform the role better. That's just the same with our everyday life, we have to have self acceptance first of the role, so that we can do the tasks better. If we complain more about it, we will be less productive.

  • Having a Me time. This is very important, some people say that they feel lost because of the many roles they have in life. Choose to have your me time, don't just always work and work. In your Me Time, you can have journaling, Bible reading and prayer time.

  • Relaxation Is a Must. Rest and relax when you need it. In your relaxation time you also do your Mom/Dad, Wife/Husband, Child/Sibling duties. You really need to set a time when you can do relaxation with family and friends. Reward yourself especially when tasks are done.

  • Maintaining the Positive Attitude. When everything goes wrong, pause for a while, assess why and how things became wrong and resolve it. Your negativity might affect others.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, role management is important, there might be conflicts ahead but then again there is no easy way. Along the way, you will learn how to handle conflicts also. I learned it the heard way and until now I am still learning. To avoid stress, you should have activities in between and right attitude is also important. Above all, ask the Lord to guide you in doing your multiple roles. We need strength everyday and our strength is in the Lord.
