King penguin chicks are known as "oakum boys," a term coined by sailors who thought they resembled the oakum fibers used to seal gaps between timbers on wooden ships. As chicks mature, they shed their fluffy brown feathers to reveal beautiful adult plumage that has evolved to survive the frigid temperatures of the Antarctic Ocean.
