DID YOU KNOW? Jollibee started as an "ICE CREAM PARLOR" Beating Western food chains on home turf, Jollibee has become a fast-food staple in the Philippines. But before it became known for its famous Chickenjoy, JOLLIBEE started as an ice-cream parlor. Originally from Southeastern China, founder Tony Tan Caktiong and his family moved to the Philippines for greater opportunities. He became involved in the restaurant business at an early age when his father opened a restaurant in Davao. Then in 1975, inspired by a trip to an ice-cream plant, Tan pursued a Magnolia Dairy Ice Cream franchise using his family's savings. He opened the first two outlets in Cubao and Quiapo. After a while, people started asking for hot food. So, he began adding burgers and sandwiches to the menu and by 1978, they became so popular that Tan ended his ice-cream franchise and converted his stores into the first iteration of Jollibee. The revamp was accompanied by the iconic red bee chosen because of its association with hard work and honey symbolizing the sweet things in life. JOLLIBEE is worth more than 1 billion USD and has over 1,300 outlets globally. But what still remains is its wave of comforting nostalgia with dishes that continue to satisfy the Filipino palate.
