If you woke up tired and grumpy, chances are, you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Waking up on the wrong side of the bed is a common saying that means you’re starting the day in a bad mood. But how does it relate to the different sides of the bed? It’s unclear how this phrase was formed but one famous theory dates back to Ancient Rome. According to the “Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable” written in 1870, this saying is a result of an old Roman superstition - it is unlucky to get out of bed with your left leg first. Therefore, many Romans made sure to get out of bed on the right side for good luck as the left side brought misfortune. It is said that even Augustus Caesar believed in this. Nowadays, the “wrong” side is believed to reflect negative emotions while the “right” side reflects the positive, making this phrase relate to your mood. Let’s hope we always wake up on the right side of the bed.
