Turtles (formerly Testudines formerly and Testudinata, Chelonia) have existed for more than 250 million years. There are more than 300 different species of turtles on Earth, of which seven are marine, 180 species live in freshwater, and the rest live on land. Turtles are considered reptiles and were on Earth even before large dinosaurs evolved. The ability to adapt turtles, whose closest relatives are crocodiles and birds, has ensured their existence to this day. Under no circumstances should they be without water for more than an hour.
