Greece or Hellas is actually the Hellenic Republic as this country is called in official documents. It gained its independence in 1829, and is located between the Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean Seas. It is the southernmost country on the Balkan Peninsula, which ranks 2nd in Europe in terms of coastline (with its 13,676 km). Its capital, Athens, is also one of the oldest in Europe, with about 40% of the total population living today. Ethnically, Greece is the cleanest country in the Balkans, accounting for about 98% of Greeks, while Turks are the largest minority group. Outside its borders, the largest number of Greeks live in Melbourne (Australia). Although Greece is connected to the sea, 80% of its surface is mountainous, which is the reason why there are no navigable rivers in Greece, and on Olympus is its highest peak - Mitikas (2,917 m). Once upon a time, the soil of Greece was only one massive rock under water, and the current shape of the earth was given after the collision of tectonic plates (even today earthquakes are not uncommon). In addition to the mainland, Greece consists of more than 2,000 islands, but only 170 of them are inhabited. The largest is Crete, and Santorini has been declared the most beautiful island in the world on several occasions.
