Although Nutella first hit the market in 1964, its predecessor, the Supercrema spread, had been around since 1951. Supercrema was developed from a previous product, Paste Gianduje, created in 1946 by Pietro Ferrero, the company's founder. The main ingredient, hazelnut, is a typical product of the province in Piedmont from which the Ferrero family originates. All these products were forerunners of today's chocolate-hazelnut mixture developed in Italy after excessive taxes on cocoa which made normal chocolate production impossible
