Snails are, in a free sense, gastropods that are protected by shells. The name is most commonly applied to terrestrial snails, terrestrial pulmonary gastropod molluscs. However, the common name snail is also used for most mollusks of the Gastropoda class that have wrapped shells that are large enough that the animal can fully retract into them. When the word "snail" is used in that more general sense, it includes not only terrestrial snails but also numerous species of sea snails and freshwater snails. Gastropods that naturally lack a shell, as well as those that have only an inner shell, are generally called naked snails. Land snails that have only a very small shell (into which the animal cannot fully indulge) are usually called half-naked. Snails are of considerable importance to humans. They appear as food products, as pests, and as vectors of disease. Their shells are used as decorative items and are incorporated into jewelry. Snails also have a certain cultural significance, and have been used in metaphors.
