The Adriatic Sea is a body of water that separates the Balkan Peninsula from the Apennine Peninsula and the Dinaric Mountains and the Apennine Mountains. The Adriatic Sea is the northernmost branch of the Mediterranean Sea, stretching from the Straits of Otranto (where it joins the Ionian Sea) to the Po Valley in the northwest. The countries with the Adriatic coast are Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania. There are over 1,300 islands in the Adriatic Sea, which are mostly located on the eastern, Croatian coast. It is divided into three basins, the northern being the shallowest and the southern the deepest, with a maximum depth of 1,233 meters. The Strait of Otranto, an underwater reef, is located on the border between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Most often currents flow in the opposite direction from the Straits of Otranto, along the east coast and back to the sea along the west (Italian) coast.
