The Yugoslav Shepherd or Sharplaninac is a breed of guard dog that was formed on the Balkan Peninsula. It is used to keep flocks of sheep on mountain pastures from predators, as well as an official guard dog. It was registered in the FCI in 1939 under the ordinal number. Its origin and genetic center is located on the Shar Mountain and the wider area, where it has traditionally protected and protected herds of Sharks from wolves and brown bears. It is believed that in the past it reached the central part of the Balkan Peninsula during numerous migrations of livestock from Asia Minor and the Caucasus, where there are still many related dogs. During the summer months, cattle breeders from Sredacka, Sirinićka and Goranska parishes joined their herds and took them to higher mountain pastures, while as guards, depending on the number of herds, they took with them from 5 to as many as 20 Sharplaninci. The wolves eventually developed tactics by stepping out of a pack of one or two wolves to drag away the guard dogs, while the rest of the pack led by an alpha male attacked the herd. In such circumstances, the best guard dogs were those who did not separate from the herd and who listened only to the commands of the shepherds. It was first shown at a cynological exhibition in Ljubljana in 1926. Following the example of other armies in the world, the Yugoslav Armed Forces needed a service dog. After selection among numerous sheep dogs in Yugoslavia, the Sharplaninac was shortlisted. It was used for the first time in the army as an official dog in 1928, and further work assessed that it was a promising dog. It is one of the first registered dog breeds in the world. He was registered in the FCI in 1939 under the official name "Illyrian Shepherd" and serial number # 041. There was type A and type B of the Illyrian shepherd. Wikipedia Šarplaninac
