I am typically not a fan of regulation. That being said I think there is still a certain level of mystique about cryptocurrency that leads people in the larger population to mistrust it and be suspicious of it. Some regulatory intervention may not stifle it so much as it legitimizes it, and could make more people comfortable with it, willing to learn more about it as an investment, and may make more businesses more comfortable to accept it. Kind of think of it somewhat like the U.S. dollar. It is SO trusted the world over that I can go to practically ANY country and my dollar will gladly be accepted over their native currency. It is BECAUSE of the regulation and trust of my dollar that this is possible. If crypto wants to become a legitimate currency at some point it needs to be able to create in the minds of its users it's value is secure. Otherwise it becomes like so many other currencies in the world that have either dissolved or lost so much value as to become worthless. If crypto is just allowed to "run free," it has the potential to become worthless at some point, and no one is going to be interested in losing their money for no other reason than nobody was somewhere making sure that would not happen.
