Answer to Quiz 46:6

Being a well preserved 17th century ship, Wasa or Vasa is a tourist attraction with its own museum. The ship's name is the same as the name of the royal dynasty then in power. But where can we find this ship and its museum?

We can find Vasa in Stockholm, Sweden. Actually, this ship was a terrible failure; in 1628, it sank after about 20 minutes of its maiden voyage. It was salvaged in 1961, remarkably intact, and is the only well preserved 17th century ship in the world, according to information from the Vasa Museum.

If you want to know more about this ship, visit the official website of the Vasa Museum.

The Vasa dynasty, or the House of Vasa, ruled Sweden 1523-1654, and Poland-Lithuania 1587-1668 – and for a while they also had the Russian throne in hand, but they never took the final step to grab it. I quote my arrticle When Moscow was Invaded - Two Empires: The French & The Swedish:

“The first warlord who took Moscow from the West is less known. It was Swedish Military Commander Jacob Pontusson De la Gardie, who conquered Moscow in 1610. In 1611, during the so-called Time of Troubles in Russia, he managed to get the son of King Charles IX of Sweden appointed to Tsar. The son soon inherited the Swedish throne as Gustav II Adolf, also known as Gustavus Adolphus, and his brother Carl Filip took his place as the nominal Tsar.

Despite De la Gardie’s arrangements and frequent requests that the new Tsar of the Swedish House of Vasa should come and take his throne, the interest in this in Sweden was very limited. Carl Filip never came to Russia, much due to his mother, the dowager queen, whose favourite son he was. She didn’t want to let him leave. That is one of the explanations offered – a plausible one indeed. But whatever the reason might have been, the matter was delayed until the Russian supporters lost interest and chose Mikhail Romanov as the new Tsar. A remarkable negligence by the power-conscious House of Vasa, who already held the throne in Sweden (including Finland and most of the Baltic area), and by another branch the one in Poland, and whose Swedish branch with Gustavus Adolphus would cross Europe with his armies and threaten the Holy Roman Empire. Indeed, Gustavus Adolphus, a devoted Protestant, wanted to create a Northern Protestant Empire as a counterweight to the staunchly Roman Catholic Holy Roman Empire.”

Answer to Quiz 46:7

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz... what are these examples of?

They are examples of different grapes, used in the production of wine. @fantagira answered that they are “examples of wine”, which is very close but not strictly right, since there are many wines made from the same sort of grape.

And now some new exercises for brain & memory...

In English, one says:

  • I was

  • You were

  • He/she/it was

  • We were

  • You (plural) were

However, there is an exception to this rule, when it should always be “were”. Can you give an example of a correct sentence containing “... I were ...”, and explain why it should be in that way?

It's right, this is correct use of "...I were..." Can you also explain why? I mean, the principle behind this.

Ok, let me try that as well.

'I' is normally a singular pronoun but since a probability is been introduced here (more like a wish) it is only proper that it takes the form of a plural pronoun. I think other singular pronouns take this form as well. E.g she wished she were a stewardess.

I hope I got that right

Well, I think you are close, but you missed the point anyway, I will not say more here now, perhaps someone else knows this. Otherwise I will get into details in the next "Quizzes & Puzzles".
