I've been doing turn off chat and I think its more than 6 years already and it gives me peace. Yes, I admit that I am avoiding random chats from strangers but I'm just doing it for the better. And it helps me recognized those people that truly care and value me. Because even if my name doesn't appeared on their active status, but still, they never failed to beep me up. Now, I'm just receiving messages from people who truly appreciates me and I'm happy with this kind of set up.
