Club1BCH Fantasy Premier League GW21 Review
Dear Joao Cancelo,
I knew this day would come, but I never imagined it will be this soon. It is with pain and heartache that I write to inform you I've traded you for Dan Burn. The pain only escalated as I watched you tear apart that Mainz left-back and square a sumptuous cross for Choupo-Moting to score the opener. I had watched Fernando Santos dropped you for Dalot at the World Cup, but I was hoping Guardiola will be wiser. Instead, he preferred Lewis and Ake. I'm still waiting for someone to come prove to me that you were dropped because you were out of form. I will be waiting.
So, back to business. It's just GW21 and it looks like we've been on to this season for 10 months. Yes, that's how unique this season of unending disruptions has been. Definitely one of a kind. FPL wise, this has been my most challenging season. For me, the plan has always been to stack up one premium, two £5 and two £4 defenders; at least two premium, two mid-priced and one budget midfielders; then, one premium striker alongside any decent striker on form. This season challenged my template and ripped it completely apart. Cancelo is the only premium defender that delivered early on. He's now at Bayern. Premium midfielders struggled badly, Mo' Salah the prime example. Instead, premium attackers, Haaland and Kane dominated, proving their worths on a regular basis. If you're not a talent spotter who finds value in mid-priced to budget options, this season will be a very tough one. It's not going great for me at the moment.
Liverpool 0:0 Chelsea
These two teams contributed immensely to the headache a lot of FPL managers are suffering right now. With the likes of TAA, Robertson, Salah, James either bitterly off form or injured, it's been a very pill to swallow. On a normal day, three of those guys will be in my team. However, I have just Salah, and he's still there simply because I had to use my 1FT to sub Cancelo. A very tepid display from those two struggling teams. FPL wise, it was a good game for those with defenders from both team. That was the first clean sheet Liverpool kept in the past 9 games. Terrible. Salah? He's blanked in the last four games. At £12.7 I'm definitely cutting him lose next week for De Bruyne. Chelsea fared better with their third clean sheet in 10 games. Badiashile started the last two games and helped keep two clean sheets. At £5.0 and with Fulham, West Ham and Southampton next, he's definitely one to seriously consider.
Bournemouth 1:1 Nott'm Forest
I could easily predict in my sleep this game will end in a low scoring draw one thousand times over. Forest have been good of late with two wins and two draws in the last four games. FPL-wise, they're nothing to write home about. However, I was impressed by Ouattara's ability. He caused problems for Forest and capped his display with an assist on his debut. However, he plays five of the top 8 teams in the next six games. Won't touch him with a long pole for now.
Leicester 2:2 Brighton
The Foxes topsy-turvy season continues. James Madison is back. He's always one to look out for. The focus here has to be fully on Brighton who keeps on blessing us with budget midfielders this season. Trossard and Mac Allister were the heroes of the first half of the season. Mitoma has taking over already. He's dropped 3 goals, 1 assist and 31 points in the last four GW. Those games included ones against Arsenal and Liverpool. His next five games are against teams on the wrong end of the table, except Fulham. And with Almiron having cooled off, it's not too late to get Mitoma in.
Southampton 0:1 Aston Villa
The result was never in doubt, right? Since Emery took over Villa has been another beast entirely. Despite their resurgence they've not being entirely important for FPL managers. Watkins has 4 goals and 4 assists this season; a paltry return. The defenders just couldn't put a lid on it too. I'll pass.
West Ham 2:0 Everton
Termed "El Sackico", we all knew whichever manager that ends up on the losing side gets sacked. Well, Lampard has been replaced by relegation specialist Sean Dyche. Jarod Bowen reminded us of his quality with two goals. However, two goals and two assists in the last 11 games is not an interesting figure for a £8.0 priced dude. Sean Dyche specializes on keeping it incredibly tight at the back, will be watching those Everton defenders closely now.
Crystal Palace 0:0 Newcastle
I'm not the type that loves to pick two defenders from the same team. If I did, it's because one will start while the other will be a £4.0 priced fifth defender - by the way, I favour 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 for my FPL team. Newcastle has forced me to finally drop that idea. I've had Trippier for a while. Can't continue to shy away from the numbers Dan Burn and Schär are producing. Thirteen clean sheets in 21 games this season, with 6 cleans sheets in the last 6 games. No other reason is needed. Almiron has blanked in the last four games after producing attacking returns from GW12 to 17. At £5.8, it will be silly to throw him to the dogs this early.
Leeds 0:0 Brentford
Another one for the defenders. The news here is that former fan favourite Rodrigo is once again injured. Ivan Toney blanked and copped a yellow card for his troubles. Just like I once said, whenever he's good, he's very good. And, whenever he plays bad, he's horrible to watch.
Manchester City 3:0 Wolves
Haaland is Haaland, so no point wasting time on discussing his abilities and heroics. For record sake, he scored another hat trick and banked three bonus points. How about premium midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne? Two assists, 19 points accumulated in the last seven games is not ideal for a £12.4 priced midfielder. With Salah experiencing his own crisis, the last thing FPL managers want is De Bruyne putting up terrible numbers. So far, those numbers are terrible. As for City's defenders, they've kept 3 clean sheets in the last 11 games. Won't be keen on adding any of them, especially since attacking points magnet Cancelo is no longer there.
Arsenal 3:2 Manchester United
What a thriller! This game delivered immensely from start to end. Condolences to FPL manager like me who had Saliba and Shaw starting this one. Their points were augmented by the returns of popular FPL midfielders Rashford, Saka, Odegaard, and striker Nketiah. Eddie Nketiah has been on fire since he took over from Jesus, but the Brazilian started training yesterday. So, he may be back to his bench roles in no time. How about Martinelli? He's blanked for three straight games now. Odegaard and Saka are putting up numbers. With the return of Smith-Rowe and acquisition of Trossard who replaced Martinelli and played well against City at the FA Cup, is it time to let the Brazilian go?
Fulham 0:1 Spurs
How can you go a whole season without having a striker who's scored 16 goals and 5 assists in 21 games? That's FPL suicide, right? Well, that's what I've done to myself so far. I'm definitely getting Harry Kane after the Manchester City game.

Gaiom FC continues his stranglehold on the number 1 position in the league. He's a full 18 points ahead of Menacing Madrid who jumped from the 5th to the 2nd position on the back of an 86 point gameweek. Just four points separates the second, third and fourth teams, so this is not even close to being over. Not yet!
AimuReds has been the best manager of the last two months. That explains why he's currently seated on 4th position, 22 points away from the top spot despite not having the most blistering of starts to the season.
