A German legend says that pansies used to have a wonderful fragrance. People came from far away to smell it and trample the grass around them. Because of this, the cattle were left without food. Seeing this, the little flower went to God and asked him to help the poor cattle. God listened to her prayer and took away the pansy's perfume, but instead endowed her with great beauty.
