Elephants are the large mammals that form the family Elephantidae of the order Proboscidea. Three species of elephant are currently recognized: the African elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant. Elephants are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
