A popular legend about the Carpathian flora shows that the two brambles (autumn and spring) were twin sisters, whom the Stepmother of the Earth chased away. They walked a long way through the forest beginning to cry and mourn. They were heard by Mrs. Autumn, personified as a woman, who metamorphosed them into buttercups, one that will bloom in the spring, another that will bloom in the fall. Since then they are always looking for each other, never meeting.
