Prehistoric people lived in "prehistory", the period before 3500 BC, when people began to write, recording the events of their lives. They are our ancestors. The first human beings lived in Africa 2 million years ago. But small human-like creatures that walked upright on their hind legs lived 4 million years ago. Scientists named them Australopithecines, their existence being confirmed by the bones and footprints discovered. One of the most famous discoveries was the skeleton of a female, nicknamed "Lucy", who lived in Ethiopia, 3.75 million years ago.
