হামিংবার্ড হচ্ছে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে ছোট পাখি। প্রায় একটি বড় আকারের মাছির আকৃতির এই রঙিন পাখিগুলো কার না ভালো লাগে! এ পর্বে জেনে নেওয়া যাক এই পাখি সম্পর্কে কয়েকটি মজার তথ্য।
১. হামিংবার্ড হাঁটতে পারে না। তবে এরাই একমাত্র পাখি যারা সামনে, পেছনে, ওপরে ও নিচে সবদিকেই পূর্ণগতিতে চলাচল করতে পারে।
২. হামিংবার্ডের বাসা একটি আখরোটের সমান।
৩. এদের কেবল আমেরিকার ট্রপিক্যাল অঞ্চলে পাওয়া যায়। আকৃতিতে ছোট হলেও পৃথিবীতে প্রায় ৪০০ প্রজাতির হামিংবার্ড রয়েছে।
৪. এদের মধ্যে ‘কিউবান বি’ প্রজাতির হামিংবার্ড সবচেয়ে ছোট। এদের দৈর্ঘ্য মাত্র ২ ইঞ্চি অর্থাৎ একটা মৌমাছির সমান।
৫. ‘কিউবান বি’ প্রজাতির হামিংবার্ড আকৃতিতে খুবই ছোট হলেও শরৎ এবং বসন্তকালীন পরিযাত্রার সময় এরা মেক্সিকো উপসাগর পাড়ি দেয়।
৬. একটি হামিংবার্ডের দেহে প্রায় ৯০০টি পালক থাকে।
৭. ওড়ার সময় এই খুদে পাখিরা ঘন ঘন ডানা ঝাঁপটায়। অনেকগুলো পাখি একসঙ্গে ডানা ঝাঁপটালে একধরনের তীব্র গুঞ্জন সৃষ্টি হয়। এজন্যই এদেরকে ‘হামিংবার্ড’ বলা হয়।
৮. এরা মিনিটে ২৫০ বার শ্বাস নেয় এবং ওড়ার সময় তা আরও বেড়ে যায়। আর এদের হৃদস্পন্দনের হার মিনিটে ১২০০ বিট।
৯. সাধারণত মধুপায়ী মনে করা হলেও ৮৫ শতাংশ হামিংবার্ডই ফুলের মধ্যে বাস করা ছোট ছোট পোকা খায়।
১০. ঘণ্টায় ৩০ কিলোমিটার ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে আরও বেশি গতিতে এরা উড়তে পারে। এরা সেকেন্ডে ৭০ বারের মতো ডানা ঝাপটাতে সক্ষম।
