Ludwig Zamenhof, from Bialystok, Poland, created the artificial language of Esperanto. His first primer, Dr. Esperanto's International Language, was published in 1887. The first world Esperanto conference was held in France in 1905, the same year Zamenhof published Fundamento de Esperanto, his main work, which became the basic Esperanto textbook and is still use today. Universala Esperanto-Asocio has an estimated worldwide membership of 500,000 speakers. There is still a thriving Esperanto-speaking community in Bialystok. #Quotes
