Sober Enough

The local courtroom was packed and noisy as people tried to settle down. The testimony began in the sentencw hearing of a woman convicted of killing her husband of twenty years by poisoning his cup of coffee. It wasn't the first time the judge would be overseeing such hearings of people killing people. They seldomly got away with it, but then in Shelly's case - the woman in question - she herself had phoned the emergency service and the police to report her husband's death, and then sat in the house too they showed up.

When they got to the house, they had found him lifeless, lying comfortably on the lone armchair on the porch, overlooking the wide lawn with Shelly beside him. Apparently she had made the phone call only after he was dead.

The defense attorney knew he had his work cut out for him trying to make his client appear more sympathetic to the judge, especially since she had been so "matter-of-fact" about the whole thing and had actually pleaded guilty. He knew there was no way she could escape imprisonment but at least they could plead for a reduced sentence seeing that she was very cooperative and sober. He straightened his gown and gave Shelly a curt nod. Everywhere quieted when he began.

"Mrs Shelly, was there any point at all that morning when you felt pity for your husband?"

She looked up from her fingers to her lawyer who was questioning her, looked around the courtroom and then back down to her fingers.

"Well.... yes. Yes. I guess" She shrugged her shoulders.

"And when was that?"

"That's....." She hesitated. "When he asked for his third cup."

And it makes you wonder, did they actually love each other before? If she could not take it why not ask for a divorce than to pick murder?
