The whale shark has existed on earth for 60 million years.

It is an elasmobranch, which likes tropical waters, and moves slowly with that majesty that characterizes it.

Its scientific name is Rhincodon typus. It measures an average of 12 meters and can reach up to 20 meters in length, which is why it is considered the largest fish in the world, hence the popular name of whale shark.

What does it look like externally?

Its head is flattened and its mouth is very large, unlike its eyes, which are small.

Its coloration is dark and contrasts with thin vertical white lines alternating with columns of white polka dots.

It has five pairs of gill slits and its pectoral and dorsal fins are even, with a long tail that can exceed two meters long.

Is it an aggressive species for humans?

Of course not. On the contrary, in spite of being the largest species, it is quite harmless and feeds on plankton, small fish, crustaceans, squid, etc.

For this, they use a water filtration system that enters by suction. Although it has tiny teeth, it does not use them in its feeding.

Divers report that it shows a friendly and sometimes even playful behavior.

Along with other sharks, it is an important element in the balance of the oceans, as it is an indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem.

Did you know that the whale shark has a worldwide celebration day?

Of course it does. Just as people have birthdays, so does our beloved whale shark. And it is August 30. This date has been celebrated since 2008, with the aim of promoting the knowledge and conservation of this beautiful marine species.

Our beloved protagonist that motivates these letters, is a natural treasure, whose conservation depends on everyone.

¡If we protect it, we will also be protecting the rest of the marine species!
