this is the painful part of life when you choose career over love even if you have been in a relationship for too long if you are losing time for each other the best way is to separate and continue life without you each other. but the 12 years that they spent together is regrettable, if only they had spent even a little time each day with each other, I know the love is still there, but if that's their decision to put their career first and I don't think there was any third party involved in their relationship and their separation was good or smooth then I'm okay maybe they just grew up and suddenly lost their love each other. maybe the only painful part of their separation is that you got used to sleeping next to him/her at night and waking up next to him/her in the morning.
