This is an Nerium Oleander Flower

We see flowers as beautiful and sweet but they have also a dark side. Not all flowers are sweet and innocent as they appear.

Nerium Oleander is a shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae. All parts of the plant contain cardiacĀ glycosides. Oleander is a common source of seriousĀ plant poisoning. The elegant Nerium oleander, the blossoms of which are crimson, magenta or creamy white, is one of theĀ most toxic plant in the world.Ā Nerium Oleander stands unvisited by the pollinators like bees.

The flower's toxins cause an irregular heart rate, which at first races and then drops to a rate far below normal, until the heart stops beating altogether. All parts of oleander plants are toxic, with an emphasis on the leaves and branches. Additionally, those that touch the leaves on an oleander plant may experience skin irritation.

Red flowered varieties of oleander appear to be more toxic. Oleander remains toxic when dry. Nerium Oleander is very dangerous and it can be fatal when ingested. Nerium Oleander can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, headache, stomach pain, serious heart problems.

Victims may experience dysphagia andĀ lock jaw, followed by tonic convulsions leading to exhaustion, drowsiness, coma, heart failure, and death. It is also unsafe for animals, it is very toxic to any species.

If someone is a victim of Nerium Oleander, garlic extract can be considered as a potential and affordableĀ antidote in oleander poisoning.

We must be aware of this kinds of plants especially that many of us loves flowers. We must be aware of its dark sides so no one will be victim of its toxicity that can cause lives to be taken away.
