In 1999, former president Joseph Estrada signed the presidential proclamation designating the last week of October as National Food Safety Awareness Week.

This is a campaign spearheaded by the Department pf Health that wants to educate people on the result of mismanagement of health food.

According to department data in 2015, one in every four diseases that emerged in 2014 were food and waterborne illnesses.

Here are three diseases that can be contracted from contaminated food:

Food poisoning

Food poisoning is commonly contracted by people with weak immune systems, children, pregnant women and the elderly.

It is caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites in food.

There are types of foods that usually already have it such as raw eggs, unpasteurized milk and juice, raw meat or seafood.

Foods cooked in large quantities are also dangerous.

These harmful agents are also obtained by not washing hands or utensils used in preparing or storing food.

Cases of food poisoning increase every summer because food spoils faster due to hot temperatures.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning

The symptoms and severity of food poisoning vary, depending on what caused it and how strong the body’s immune system is.

The most common symptoms of food poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.

These symptoms may appear an hour to ten days after eating.

There are a few cases of food poisoning that heal spontaneously but there are a few that need to be taken to the hospital.

It is better to test immediately to get the correct answer.

Diarrhea

From January to June this year, 6,701 cases of acute bloody diarrhea were recorded in the country.

Diarrhea is the fourth leading cause of death among children aged five and under, according to UNICEF.

The bacteria that cause diarrhea live in raw meat, eggs, shellfish and unpasteurized milk.

The most common case of food-related diarrhea is caused by foods not placed in the refrigerator or rotten foods eaten by the patient.

Viruses are also to blame for the development of this disease.

The virus is transmitted through unclean hands, kitchen utensils, utensils and food.

Symptoms of diarrhea

Most people get diarrhea once or twice a year.

It usually lasts two to three days and can be treated with over-the-counter medications.

Here are the symptoms of diarrhea:

bloated na tyan

thin or watery stools

feeling disgusted

vomiting

nausea

blood in the stool

When the stool is watery and the patient does not drink much water, he or she may become dehydrated.

Typhoid fever

According to data from the Department of Health, 11 people have died in the country this year due to typhoid fever.

This disease is a bacterial disease caused by Salmonella typhi.

This bacteria is transmitted when eating food or drink touched by a person with typhoid fever.

Bacteria multiply in the intestines and mix with the bloodstream.

Typhoid fever is chronic during floods or any disaster due to unclean water.

Symptoms of Typhoid Fever

Symptoms of typhoid fever usually appear one to three weeks after exposure to the bacteria.

The symptoms that should be observed are the following:

High fever for several days

Pain of tyan

Vomiting

Constipation

Bloated tyan

Soft dirt

Weakness

No appetite
