Whispers of desire

Art 1 Her feet froze on the dusty pavement, forcing her to stop. He stopped too, glancing ahead before turning back to her. The street lamps reflected in her moist eyes like sudden flashes of lightning. Ahead of them, red and yellow tapes fluttered in the night breeze — the unmistakable sign of a crime scene. A restless crowd pressed against the barriers. Her heart dropped. It was her house. Her mind, always quick to imagine the worst, began racing — picturing a life without Tunde and little Amara, both still inside. The sound of approaching sirens ripped through her thoughts, and she clutched at her chest, scanning the chaos. She was too shocked to scream, too numb to cry. Panic crawled over her skin. He stepped closer, his arms wrapping around her trembling shoulders. Close enough to hear her heart hammering against his shirt. Relief flickered through her — at least her closest friend was here — but fear quickly swallowed it. “Tunde is still in there—” she stammered. “And Amara,” he added softly. The thought that the police might be here because of her husband made her stomach churn. Especially since Tunde, a black man in a tense city, was never far from suspicion. “I’m sure it’s nothing,” he murmured, but his tone carried little conviction. She gripped his shirt tighter, praying he was right.
