Have you ever thought why is it called HODL not HOLD?
That was the first question I asked myself when I first heard about HODL. Did they misspelled it? For sure you guys thought the same too. So let me share to you why it's called HODL. In fact, it's having its anniversary this month.
The term HODL originated in December 2013 Bitcoin Forum post by a user named GameKyuubi. The entry was entitled "I AM HODLING" and followed by the first sentence “I type d that tyitle twice because I knew it was wrong the first time". It was obvious that the user was drunk at that time of posting as it was loaded with typos and in all caps phrases.
In that post, he ranted regarding his poor trading skills. The price of Bitcoin was also plummeting at that moment, and because of his frustration he made that post and planned to just hold his Bitcoin. His post also stated, “You only sell in a bear market if you are a good day trader or an illusioned noob,” and “In a zero-sum game such as this, traders can only take your money if you sell.”
The post rapidly circulated among the crypto community and the mispelled "HODL" turned into internet slang to imply when a crypto user prefer to hold Bitcoin instead of trading it.
The term was later considered as traders' strategy given the volatility of the crypto market. "HODL" refers to a buy-and-hold situation where hodlers hold their crypto and stop from trading when the crypto price value plunges. The hodlers are safe from trading inclinations - whether buying at a high price or selling at a low price.
And this term "HODL" often backronymed to "Hold On Dear Life". It also becomes the "favorite mantra" for crypto holders during market routes.
