Treating Domestic Staffs

Let me share this thread with you. On Sunday our domestic help told me that she was going to give half of her salary to her mum. Since it's the same state, my husband gave her transport and asked her when she would be back, she said after service and she left. We didn't lock the door, we just closed the door so she can come in when she gets back and we headed for his parents' house to visit. When we got back, she wasn't back. I was not happy but something just kept me calm, I went into their room and noticed that even the clothes she washed for my children were all dirty and smelling. I decided to empty their boxes and washed everything, cleaned and aired the rooms. While I was doing that on Monday morning, I noticed that she had packed all her things and left. I immediately called my husband to tell him, he came back home almost Immediately and we drove to her village to confirm that she went home. After confirming, we didn't ask her why she left, we just spoke to her mum, and asked the children to wave goodbye to her. When I got home, I was troubled in my spirit, I started trying to figure out why she left. I had gone to resign from my job and decided to be a full-time mum. When I explained the situation at home, my boss started lecturing me on how to take care of domestic help, it was very embarrassing for me because I treated her well. I treated her like my blood, I will sacrifice meals for her at times, and she sleeps on the same bed with my children. I don't wake her up in the morning, I allow her to wake up when she is done sleeping. I don't raise my voice at her, I explain things gently to her but I couldn't figure out why she left. I loved her, she is more like the best nanny I have had for my children. I make clothes for her and put my time into making them beautiful, once her mum argued that I bought the dress but her daughter saw me making it for her at home. I felt like someone that was heartbroken but in all these I never got upset. My husband was even surprised that I wasn't angry, instead, I was asking him to talk to her let's see how we can come to a compromise if it's something we can work out and he promised that we would go visit them again, only for her to come on Tuesday evening with her mum to come to beg us. After they finished begging, I asked her just one question while containing my inner excitement; 'why did you run away?' She said she didn't know what came over her, after much talking, I asked her to come back and decided to go over her workload. She was expecting me to return to work, but I told her that I want to spend more time with them, so I am not going and I want to take over most of her work so that she wouldn't feel overwhelmed again. I decided to treat her like a child and just give her simple tasks while I do the major work. I brought back my sewing materials and turned my home into my workstation after I am done with chores at home, leaving her to play with the children. She is 17 years old, although she lied that she was 18 while we were employing her but we later discovered that she is 17. The youngest I have ever employed and the most efficient and lively but very quiet. I had to tell her to be more relaxed and open to me, I still observe her more carefully to know when she is tired or sleepy because she won't tell me. I also stylishly ask her what we should eat the next day so that I can know what she feels like eating. At times, being nice to our domestic staff is not enough. The task of taking care of children is very stressful, we shouldn't just get back and go relax. No matter how good you are, they will still leave if they are overwhelmed. Doing some chores with them makes them realize that it's not a degrading task, they are just helping out and they will have their dignity intact. Never assume things, pay close attention to them, they are people's children too.
