The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect sphere of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field via a dynamo process. It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth.

The Sun is a yellow dwarf star, a hot ball of glowing gases at the heart of our solar system. Its gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything – from the biggest planets to the smallest particles of debris – in its orbit.

The sun is mostly composed of the elements hydrogen (H) and helium (He). By mass the composition of the sun is 75 percent hydrogen and 25 percent helium. Various metals make up less than 0.1 percent of the mass of the sun.

The sun has an interior consisting of the core, radiative zone, and convective zone. It has a visible surface called the photosphere, then the chromosphere, which usually isn't visible, and the very outer layer called the corona.

Layers of the Sun

  • the solar interior composed of the core (which occupies the innermost quarter or so of the Sun's radius),

  • the radiative zone,

  • and the convective zone,

  • then there is the visible surface known as the photosphere,

  • the chromosphere,

  • and finally the outermost layer, the corona.

At the core of the sun, gravitational attraction produces immense pressure and temperature, which can reach more than 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius). Hydrogen atoms get compressed and fuse together, creating helium.
