My Bead Making Journey: How A Little Girl's Love For Jewellery Became A Beautiful Passion

There is something about beads that has always drawn me in. From the time I was a little girl I have always loved jewellery. The way beads catch the light, the way they sit beautifully on the skin, the way they tell a story without saying a word. I would see women and girls wearing beaded bracelets, necklaces and waist beads and my heart would just light up. I did not know then that one day I would be the one creating those beautiful pieces with my own hands. My journey into bead making started in junior secondary school when an organisation came to our school and organised a workshop. We were given different options to choose from and without hesitation I chose bead making. Something in me just knew. That workshop opened a door I never knew existed and what surprised me the most was how naturally it came to me. It felt like I had done it before. Like my hands already knew what to do. I realised then that this was not just an interest. It was a talent. After the workshop I did not stop. I went home and started practicing on my own. I was creative and innovative, experimenting with different patterns, colors and styles. I started making bracelets first, then anklets, then the beautiful and culturally rich waist beads that our Yoruba culture is so well known for. Each piece I completed made me more confident and more passionate about the craft. And recently I have taken on a new and exciting challenge. I have started making beaded bags! This has been a whole new experience for me and I am absolutely loving every moment of it. The Joy Of Creating There are no words that fully capture how I feel when I finish a piece. It is a deep sense of happiness and fulfilment. Looking at something beautiful that came from my own hands, from my own creativity and effort, is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. Every bracelet, every anklet, every waist bead and every bag carries a piece of me in it and that makes it special. The Challenges I Face I will be honest because this journey is not without its difficulties. My biggest challenge right now is finances. I am not in the most comfortable financial position and bead making requires materials that cost money. Sourcing for beads is also a challenge because getting quality materials at affordable prices is not always easy. There is also the physical demand of the work itself. Bead making requires you to sit for long hours, sometimes days, to complete a single piece. The labour is intense even though the skill itself comes naturally to me. There are moments when my back aches and my eyes are tired but when I look at the finished product all of that fades away. My Dream Despite the challenges my dream is very clear and very big. I want to build a brand. I want to create a name that people recognise and trust when it comes to handmade beaded jewellery and accessories. I want to sell locally in Nigeria and reach customers internationally too. I believe Nigerian craftsmanship deserves a global stage and I want my beads to be worn by people all over the world. This is just the beginning of my story and I am excited to share every step of this journey with you here on Readcash.
