The weather is extremely hot during the day, with a sudden change in the evening and the possibility of rain on any given day. My mom's Billbergia began to bloom with the right conditions of humidity, sunlight, and not overwatering. Billbergia is a Bromeliad or pineapple family. Some people believe that the flower of Billbergia resembles the flower of the Bird of Paradise because of the bracts or leaflike clusters beneath the flowers. The stiff, spiny, often strap-shaped leaves grow directly from the root in a rosette. The flowers grow on a spike or loose cluster from the center of the rosette. Billbergia's flower is really distinctive, with colors including red, yellow, green, brown, purple, or pink arranged in a zigzag pattern.
