Premarital Counseling

With the rapid increase in the number of divorces, ministers are becoming more concerned about preventive measures for broken marriages. In recent years, much study and writing have been done in the area of premarital counseling. Most ministers require at least one counseling session in which the wedding ceremony is planned. Others add to the planning session a discussion of adjustments in marriage. Now many ministers are extending the number of sessions in an attempt to prepare young people better for their lifelong roles as partners in marriage. The scriptures should be studied concerning the nature of the home, the permanency of marriage, the role of husband and wife, the responsibility for adjustment, and the development of happy and successful relations as companions and parents. The purposes of premarital counseling are to define what each partner expects of the other in the marriage relationship and to insure that couples are able to communicate, have faced up to the areas of adjustment in marriage, and understand the seriousness and permanency of marriage.
