The puffer fish is a very popular type of fish, they are those beasts that get drunk when they are in danger, and they can also have poisonous thorns. They have small fins and aren’t exactly some swimming champions, so when needed - they inflate their elastic belly with lots of water and air and become several times larger (and impossible to swallow). Those thorns from the beginning of the story are just additions to self-defense.
