As I continue my journey in Call Center industry I learned not just taking calls but also by providing constructive criticisms and providing feedback. Everytime my supervisor would coach us they would follow a certain guidelines that would make the feedback sound better and to make sure that we will be motivated to go to work.

It is important for us to know how we can properly provide a feedback or criticism be it with your colleagues or friends. You would have to be sensitive and use the right words and sentence.

So let us talk about a certain technique:

  • START

  • CONTINUE

  • STOP

"Words are like swords"

Have you ever met a person who said I'd rather have a thousand of lashes than to hear him say," I don't love you" or " I hate you"?

What about your classmate who cried because their mom or dad compared them to someone else? Words are like swords that could slash your heart and make it bleed causing you feel demotivated or no longer love to live.

You might have also encountered peers or anyone who would try to cut their wrists or wound their selves just because they were criticized and for them it create a great impact to them as a whole. Sometimes you say they are over-reacting or attention-seeker but if you read my article yesterday: https://read.cash/@Glez/a-single-comma-matters-and-so-are-you-6aa2c3cb.

I mentioned about TOLERANCE on this article. Not all person is capable of carrying themselves especially their emotions well. So that is why we have to look for a better ways as to how we can provide feedback in a way that we also talk about their strength then transition it to their weakness.

START

  • Discuss one or two things that the person should "start" doing, which they forgot. Similarly, this could be new techniques or task that could be beneficial for them to start doing.

Example : If they might forget to send you the report or when you noticed the person tends to forget a certain task you might inform them to start with making it a habit to take note details.

CONTINUE

  • Discuss one or two things that the person is currently doing that are good, effective techniques or practices. Everyone likes to hear "positive" feedback, and surely the person is doing at least a few things in the right way!

Example: This is when you give feedback on what they have done good and/or better so far. And advise them to be consistent with it.

STOP

  • Discuss one or two things that the person should "Stop" doing. These could be bad habits that the person may not even be aware of or other practices that are neither not effective or are getting in the way to succes.

Example: Using inappropriate word and not being formal when talking to other people or clients. You would have to inform them that the least thing we want to happpen is for the clients to feel like they are not respected.

Or to make it simple, say when you noticed your friend is posting copied details or post from the other users and you then inform him/her because it can be plagiarism and its against the policy.

CONCLUSION

So if you are a leader, a teacher or a concern friend we have to start doing it right when providing feedback. Thinking that frankly speaking things out to people would be okay, is NOT OKAY. Arrange your thoughts, be professional because at the end of the day we are all trying to survive in this world.

Before I end this article let me leave this here:

I love that concept, to correct mistakes instead of insult them. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. ;)

I appreciate it when people correcting me in a good manner. There's always a better way to correct people. We must always be sensible and think before we act though it doesn't apply all the time as I too, is very impulsive in nature.

Mistakes can be corrected not insulted.

True.. Sometimes we are not aware that we are already insulting or hurting someone when giving advice or correcting something. The tone in giving advice should also consider here.

I couldn't agree more. You are right. And sometimes it is way different when we give feedback through chat instead of personally doing it coz some might also misinterpret it.

Words are like swords. That's certainly true. And just like swords, words are double bladed. If you don't use them properly, someone will get hurt one way or the other.
