I just finished reading syllables to my son. Yes, it was too early because I intended to do it so that he could learn to read faster. He always wakes up early, at 4 am or before 4 am he is awake. I thought of making it a routine, to read to him every morning before I make breakfast while I have coffee. I also noticed that he was more willing to participate at such times maybe because there weren't too many distractions. You can try this if you have a child or sibling who wakes up too early.
