The Story Of My Dog, Max

Animals are creatures with extraordinary spirits. They bless the hearts of people with their presence. I was fortunate to be found and selected by an abandoned dog, 17 years ago. My life got changed when he came to my neighborhood, as a young alpha "big shot". From the very first moment, it was clear to everybody that Max (as we decided to call him) is something else... something magnificent, someone Godly. He was joyful, civilized, and acted more intelligently than most of my neighbors.

A part of my heart got occupied with love towards animals perhaps before I was born, which urged me to take care of Max and his friends. I've been feeding the entire dog crew, which cost me all of my savings (but was worthy). That established their trust in me, which came in handy. I was not bothered by evil kids anymore, 'cause there were plenty of dogs around me, ready to protect me. A movie should be made about it, 'cause some memories are too special to be described with mere words. For instance, their loyalty was otherworldly. Wherever I'd go, they'd go. All of my school colleagues and teachers had to get used to a pack of dogs in front of the school, 'cause they've been following and spending hours on waiting for me. In fact, now I realize that my neighborhood was "empty" until they arrived. We'd have nothing positive and cheerful to remember if there were no animals to make us smile.

Everyone knew that sooner or later the day is gonna come when everything will get changed radically and drastically. That's exactly what happened. One retired Yugoslav army officer decided to call the police and report that there are many "abandoned dogs" in the neighborhood. I don't know the proper word, but according to the translator, it's the dog pound that came and picked them up. It was a heartbreaking experience for many reasons. Back then, animals that found no new owners in 30 days were put to sleep. As I lived in the apartment, my parents couldn't let me take them all. Well, miracles happen just when we desire them the most and expect them the least. All of Max's friends were taken by a lovely family from Germany. Can you imagine that!? Tourists! How did they end up in a dog shelter? That must have been God's work!

The only one remaining was Max (we know of that 'cause parents demanded information from the manager). 9 days after Max ended up in a dog jail was Valentine's day. I remember it as it was yesterday. On my way back home from school, I got a call from my father. He asked, "Where are you!? I am coming to pick you up! Something happened...!". When I came back home, there was Max eating what was supposed to be my lunch! Mister was too hungry to miss a chance to grab a chicken while there was nobody at home. With tears of joy, I thanked my parents for adopting my friend. They looked at each other, and said: "it wasn't us!".

"What do you mean, it wasn't you? Then who was it?". Well, it was Max. He jumped over 3 meters (a bit more than 9 ft) tall fence while in dog's park, and ran for 10 kilometers (6 miles) all the way to the doors of my apartment.... on Valentine's day! How did he know the way back "home", we might never figure out! What makes the story funnier is that on the 10th day, he should have gotten castrated... It was a matter of "life and death", for him, if you know what I mean...

My parents called a manager and asked "have you lost a dog?". The manager laughed, and said, "No dogs can escape from here. Our fence is too high!". The morning after he called back, and asked: "Do you know where is Max? The maestro jumped over three meters tall fence and escaped!". This time, it was my father that laughed, and replied: "Max is here!". The only thing the manager asked of my parents is to come with Max to give him a chip, and documents, which they did.

Max's love knew no boundaries and limits. Years of happiness and struggle were before us. Trust me, it was a struggle riding a motorcycle while there's a dog running behind the wheels. What makes it even worse is that Max was always faster... he outran all of my scooters and mopeds. Sometimes, his stubbornness was causing problems. Once, he ran after my mother's car, all the way to the highway (autobahn). The asphalt damaged his paws so badly, he was unable to walk for days.

Those are the kinds of stuff I think about every time someone mentions "love". Many times we hear "I love you" by the people that are not willing to do anything to back the expression up, yet, look at what a dog was doing. That couldn't have been faked.

Max lived as a president. He was fed with the best food, had his own room, and had plenty of freedom. Everyone knew him in our old neighborhood, which is why he was allowed to walk freely whenever he wanted. There was one restaurant two kilometers away from our home. The animal-loving chef was always giving leftovers to abandoned dogs and cats. My Max figured that out and was going there every Friday at 9 pm (in my country, people eat fish every Friday). Imagine that! Once, I was going downtown... While passing by that restaurant I took a look, and there was my Max with the chef, eating seabass. It made me laugh so hard, I almost caused an accident.

His intelligence was quite hilarious... I remember one morning, there was a knock on the doors. I opened, looked up, not expecting the dog would knock... When I looked down, I saw Max... He brought his golden retriever girlfriend. Nice choice, isn't it? A boy liked blondes! Such memories are engrafted. They can't be forgotten. I'll remember him until the day I pass away from this dimension.

These days, Max is not feeling well. He is old, getting blind, can't walk, needs to wear diapers, be fed, and given the water directly to the mouth. It's a sad thing to witness, especially when anxiety attacks come at night. He begins howling and shaking. Sometimes, he doesn't recognize anyone. I'm not sure should we put him to sleep, or not. My family members say "no, we are not going to do that", but I think it'd ease his pain because this ain't no living but pure suffering. Not only that but the neighbours are also being disturbed when Max begins howling. Sometimes It lasts for hours. It's impossible to calm him down. The police came, told us we'd been reported. When they saw what condition grandpa Max is in, they turned and went away with teary eyes. Our second dog (Ella) is trying to make him feel better by lying beside him, all the time. It's a heartbreaking thing to witness.

I'll never understand how can some people act cruelly towards animals, under the presumption that they have no consciousness or souls. They're more soulful than we are, and many animals I encountered were incredibly intelligent. My cat, for example, is a true princess. We can literally talk with her. She understands it all and gives answers by gestures. What would you do if you found yourself in a similar situation? Would you wait for Max's natural end to come, or would you speed up the process? It's a hard decision. My mother still believes Max will recover someday, (then you know how much he means to our family).

The picture below was taken a few years ago, while Max was still healthy:

Symbolically, we celebrated his birthdays on Valentine's Day. He is 19 years old, and might not live to get another birthday meat cake, however, the memories will remain, and his spirit live on. His story taught me there are many unique, abandoned, and unrecognized souls that would give their Earthly lives to be loved. Animals can't help themselves. They depend on us. I'll do my part by starting the "Phoenix Animal Rescue Service". Wish me luck!

I don't love just dogs, but all animals, and plants. They're making our world magical. 😊 Someone stole your dog, and that's very sad. My cat got stolen too, his name was Jacky.

Most German dogs are very loyal and intelligent. My favorite is Dobermans. Yours?
