You may be wondering where I'm going with this, but sometimes our plans don't go as planned, or what we want to do doesn't appear to be possible, and we find ourselves in a bind.

That's why I'm interested. We occasionally get it all wrong when we give it our all, but when we don't take the situation seriously and don't give it our all, things seem to go our way.

This occurred to me as a result of an incident involving an elderly gentleman whom I knew when I was a young lad playing football in a pitch which was located beside his house.

Returning to what happened, good things comes happens when you least expect it.

This gentleman name was Mr Samuel, and when I met him, he was already old but still athletic, and he worked at a bank security post not far from his home. He does have one issue he was battling with.... He was hooked to a particular gambling, which in our country is referred to as baba ijebu.

Baba Ijebu is a lottery enterprise that is well known in Nigeria.... I don't think I've ever seen a game of chance as difficult as baba ijebu. This is how it works..... You must choose random numbers from 1 to 90, with a limit on how many numbers you can choose. After 3 hours of playing the game, Baba Ijebu will reveal the winning 5 numbers, and if the numbers you predicted appear among the 5 numbers, you are a winner.... note; the least number that must appear among the winning 5 numbers for you to be a winner is two and if three of the numbers you predicted appear on the winning 5 numbers your winnings becomes bigger and if it's 4 it becomes more bigger.

Back to Mr Samuel, he was really addicted to this game and would spend hours in the baba ijebu lotto shop just to predict numbers to the point where he would use his hard earned salary to play and it would cost him a lot of things to the point where he would become poor and his wife would abandon him, and on top of it all, he would become addicted to alcohol because he was so depressed that he couldn't go a day without drinking alcohol, and all of this while he was still playing the baba ijebu lotto

On this fateful day, at the end of the month, after receiving his salary as usual, he went to the nearest bar and drank alcohol until he was completely drunk, after which he returned home as usual and went to the nearest baba ijebu lotto shop to play only two games, for which he paid $5 (about $2500 in Nigeria). He was inebriated when he did this.

On his way home, he stopped at another shop and played the same number for another $5, despite the fact that he had previously played the game. Surprisingly, when he returned home, he sent his friend son to assist him in playing another $5 lotto with the same number he had previously played, but he had no idea what he was doing because he was drunk.

He couldn't find any money in his pocket the next morning after regaining his memory; all he could find were his tickets for the game he had predicted, and when he realized he had predicted the same number on the same ticket, he was furious with himself; he had never imagined something big was about to happen to him that would change his life.

So he went out hungry looking for lunch before going to work, and on his way there, he tried to check up the prediction results from yesterday, and he realized he had won a large sum of money, which he attempted to pay out, but they told him he didn't play it here.

So he had to start hunting for all of the shops in the area because each has a different terminal number, and he eventually discovered the three shops, and now he is enjoying his life again with his wife and children. The last time I saw him he bought his child to our football club to start training. And he told us a short story that if he was wealthy, he would never gamble, that it was poverty that drove him to bet, and that now that he is wealthy, he will never gamble again, and that he will teach his children not to gamble because his life would have been a waste if he hadn't won the million dollars.

No one could have predicted that the alcoholic of yesterday would become a millionaire and that everything in his life would change; the way he speaks now is different, people respect him more, and he has never gambled since winning that big sum of money.

Final thought

I never said gambling is bad; I was only trying to link to the topic because this man spent hours in the gambling shop trying to guess numbers, but he never won anything until one day when he was intoxicated and didn't think hard enough to predict numbers, and the next day he became a millionaire.

Oh boy, he had two very dangerous addiction at the same time; drinking and gambling. I am glad that he ended well for him, but so many people aren't so lucky.

I hope he has also stopped drinking now sha

To me, I still do not support gambling. The man though used it wisely because there are some who gamble and win, they won't be able to account for such money after being spent unnecessarily.

Gambling is for the poor ones thinking they might get rich through it.

So this story was real. Sometimes we get our luck unexpectedly, and it's our choice to use it for good or not. In his case, although he is addicted to gambling before, he was still blessed to have an exchange for all the money that he lost. At least he teach his children with good manners :)
