God is Wrathful

I’ll be sharing one of the major takeaways I have while reading the book of Jeremiah. I always ask myself whenever I read the Bible is that “What does it tell me about God?” because that’s one of the biggest reason why I read the Bible—I want to know who God really is. (There are other reasons but that’s for another blog) Background: Jeremiah was a prophet who was called by God to prophecy the coming judgment for Judah because they have been disobeying God, they did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD and they were basically rebelling against God. God kept on sending prophets to warn them but they never took it seriously. GOD IS WRATHFUL This is what the book tells me about God. Don’t get me wrong, all the attributes of God exists equally in the whole Bible—He is loving, He is good, He is just, He is gracious, He is faithful, He is wrathful, He is holy and all of that exists together, we don’t divide His attributes like He is more wrathful in Old Testament but He is more gracious in the New. No, IT IS NOT WORKING THAT WAY. ALL HIS ATTRIBUTES ARE EXISTING TOGETHER, IT IS NOT CHANGING THE WAY HE IS NOT CHANGING. Going back, because the book of Jeremiah was about judgment, it highlights God’s wrath—this is one of my observations. When we say God’s wrath and if you actually read God’s judgment over them, you would probably think that He is cruel and not loving. But I saw it differently and that’s what I want to share with you. I saw how much He hates sin. How much He can’t stand disobedience and how much His Holiness was demanding that those sins should be punished. And it is important for me because you see, I can’t serve a God who just allows sin and as sinful as I am, seeing His wrath actually allowed me to see His grace even more. It points me back to the cross where Jesus just received that wrath so that I would receive mercy and grace instead. It showed me how God being wrathful actually Him being loving as well. “Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn from their wicked ways; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.” (Jeremiah 36:3) He wants the people to realize that apart from Him there is no life at all. You see how that verse showed His heart? How much He is willing to forgive the people’s sin if only they repent. It showed me how God pursued His people and how deep His love is for them and for us. You see, God is wrathful and it is not a bad thing. The thing is, I want us all to worship God because of who He said He is, we can’t talk about God’s love and worship Him because He is loving without also talking about His wrath and worship Him because He is wrathful. This is important because worshipping God based only on what we perceive Him to be might actually lead to idolatry. We should learn to know Him based on His words and not based on what we want to believe about Him. This is the only way towards the true worship.
