Part One: Engaging and Guiding
Before we start teaching the game of chess to our child, we will start with the motivation work. Children are always eager to play chess, as chess has a mysterious nature. The shapes of the chess pieces attract their attention because they resemble cartoon characters.
We will start with a home activity to get our child excited about playing chess. First, we will make a cardboard piggy bank with our child. We will keep the duration of this event as long as possible. For example, after the cardboard piggy bank is finished, we can decorate it by painting it.
But before we start making this piggy bank, we need to tell our child that we are going to buy a chess set with the money that will be saved in this piggy bank. We will throw the first coin into this piggy bank to reward its success in decorating the piggy bank. In the coming days, we can throw money into the piggy bank to reward the child's performance in matters such as tidying his room at home and eating regularly.
In order not to discourage our child, we will not continue this home activity for more than 6 days. For example, we might say that we will surprise him if he finishes all the food on his plate on the night of the fifth day or if he goes to bed on time. The child will likely take a positive approach to this. In this case, we can explain the surprise to the child. We can express to him that he has enough money in the piggy bank and that he can now own a chess set.
Since we will go to buy a chess set the next day, it would be more appropriate to make this day coincide with a holiday. It would be more correct to go out not only to buy chess sets, but also for holiday activities.
The next day, after opening the piggy bank and counting the money and giving it to the child, we will go to the store where we will buy the chess set. We can let him choose a chess set that matches the amount of money he has saved. If our child wants to buy a more expensive chess set, we can say that he can buy it when he saves enough money.
Our child will probably look forward to playing chess as he has bought his first set of chess. We can tell him that he needs to be patient by reminding him that we are planning to spend the holiday together having fun outside. Eskisehir Travel Notes
While walking by following the Porsuk Stream that runs through the middle of the city, the houses that seem to be historical at first glance caught my attention. The city, animated by the water, was established around the Porsuk Stream. That's why I went to the Porsuk Stream first. Porsuk Stream is a river that can be visited by gondola. After walking for a while among the Ottoman houses in Odunpazarı, I realized that it was time for lunch. Since the weather was very hot, I wanted to go to the nearest mosque to cool off. This mosque, whose name is Kurşunlu was a complex built by Shepherd Mustafa Pasha, one of the Ottoman viziers, in the 1500s. Great constructions such as mosque, madrasah, primary school and caravanserai were located in it. I sat in the fountain, drank a sip of water and cooled off.

Also, on the way to the mosque, I saw prayer beads and ornaments made of Meerschaum in a shop on the way. Meerschaum is a very famous mineral type in Eskişehir. Being easy to work, this stone has been widely used in the production of ornaments in Eskişehir.
I realized that I was hungry after all this travel. While looking for something to eat after leaving Kurşunlu Mosque, the writings on the signs caught my attention. Signs of several restaurants read "**raw pastry**". Wondering what it was like, I went into one of the restaurants and ordered a raw pie. Although it's called raw börek, it's not raw at all, it's even fried nicely in oil. This is one of the most delicious pastries I've ever eaten, **this non-raw raw pastry :)**
After I had a good lunch, I drank two glasses of strong tea and watched the surroundings. It was very nice to watch the city while drinking my tea in the garden of the restaurant. After the midday heat had passed and the weather had cooled down a bit, I set out to visit the art and science park, which is located a little outside the city center and is frequented by many tourists.
After a short journey, I reached the park. This park called Sazova, was a science, culture and art park built on a very large area. A huge open-air park with a science center, space house, fairy tale mansion, underwater world, pirate ship, real airplanes and even a zoo.
I spent the rest of the day in this park. It was such a big park that it might take a few days to fully explore it. I can say that I did an accelerated tour. After my tour of the park, before dinner, I returned to the hotel and took a nice shower. I had my dinner at one of the stylish restaurants by the Porsuk Stream and returned to my hotel after a short evening walk in the city centre.
My trip to Eskişehir was really nice. If I had more time, I could visit more places. I will do so next time.

What Does Old Land Mean?

My sister went on a 12-hour trip to visit my father. My father has been having some health problems for a while. He was born in 1946. So a 76 year old crazy firecracker :)

The Maiden's Tower in Istanbul
Today, I would like to talk to you about the Maiden's Tower, one of the historical buildings of Istanbul, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Many legendary stories are told about this magnificent work, which was built on a small island in the Bosphorus and is believed to have been built around 340 BC, although it is not known exactly when it was built.
The most well-known of these stories are as follows:
One of the fortune-tellers of the period prophesied that the daughter of the king of the city would die by being bitten by a snake. On top of that, the king, who loves his daughter very much, has a tower built in the middle of the sea for his daughter to live, and thus aims to prevent the snakes from reaching his daughter. However, one day, a snake hidden in the basket containing the fruits taken to the tower, stings the king's daughter and causes her death.
Many legendary stories such as this one are told about the Maiden's Tower. Now let's take a look at the history of the tower together.
The ancient name of the Maiden's Tower, located 200 meters off Salacak in the Üsküdar district on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, was Damalis and Leandros. Damalis, who was the wife of the Athenian king of the time, Kharis, was buried on these beaches after he died, and this name was given to the tower. In addition, the tower was also called Arcla, meaning small castle, during the Eastern Roman Empire.
After the Turks conquered Istanbul, a restoration was carried out using wood to repair the weathered tower. However, at the beginning of the 18th century, a fire broke out and the wooden tower was destroyed. Within 6 years, the Maiden's Tower was rebuilt by the chief architect of the city. During this reconstruction, a glass section is made at the top of the tower and its roof is arranged in the shape of a dome.
This tower, which was destroyed several times over time, was rebuilt each time because both the magnificent view of the Bosphorus from the location of the island built on it and its location at a very suitable point to be used as a lighthouse made it indispensable in many different periods.
The Maiden's Tower was used as a tax collection center from commercial ships, especially the lighthouse, and even as a quarantine hospital during the cholera epidemic in the first quarter of the 19th century.
The Maiden's Tower is located on an island that can be easily seen with the naked eye from the beach. The coastal point where this tower can be seen most easily is also the meeting place of lovers.
Maiden's Tower, which is a special restaurant today, is an ideal place for lovers to have a delicious dinner at sunset and accompanied by the unique view of the Bosphorus.

The planet Uranus, which looks blue-green due to the small amount of methane in its atmosphere, can be even colder than Neptune, the farthest planet from the Sun, with its temperature that can drop to -242 degrees Celsius in places. The winds of Uranus, which can reach high speeds, blow in the opposite direction with the rotation of the planet in the equator region, while the winds at the poles blow in the same direction as the planet.
Because Uranus has an axial tilt of 98 degrees, it rotates as if it were on its side. This situation is very effective on the seasons. In this article, I would like to give you information about the atmospheres of both the Sun and some planets in our system. So let's start…
Our planet has an atmosphere made up of gas molecules that it can hold around by gravity. This gas mass protects life on Earth by absorbing high-energy solar radiation and balancing the temperature difference between day and night. Of course, all celestial bodies with sufficient gravity can have an atmosphere, even if they contain different components.
Now, let's take a journey through our solar system and get to know the atmospheres of celestial bodies.
Let's begin our journey with the star that gives our system its name, namely the Sun. At the top of the Sun's bright surface is an atmospheric layer called the chromosphere. The thin red stripe visible as the Moon obscures this bright surface during a solar eclipse is the chromosphere layer. Above the chromosphere extends the corona layer, which is likened to a crown due to its shape. While the surface temperature of the Sun reaches about 5800 degrees Celsius, the temperature in the corona layer can reach 2 million degrees Celsius.

On Mercury, the daytime temperature exceeds 430 degrees Celsius, while at night it approaches -180 degrees Celsius.
Let's reach Venus, the planet that moves away from Mercury and surprises with its warmth. Venus is the planet with the highest surface temperature in our system. The atmosphere of Venus, which offers a yellow sky view, traps heat so much that its surface temperature can rise above 480 degrees Celsius. The planet's atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, and its clouds are sulfuric acid. The atmosphere of Venus is a very good example to see how carbon dioxide, which triggers global warming on our planet, increases the surface temperature of a planet.

Santa Claus, Who Is He?

Today I want to talk about Christmas. I've seen a lot of Christmas posts here lately. I wanted to write one too. I am a Muslim and I must confess that I do not celebrate Christmas because Christmas is a kind of Christian holiday. As far as I know, it is a holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus. Actually, in this respect, I should also celebrate Christmas because we Muslims love Jesus. Of course, our view of Jesus is somewhat different from that of Christians. Anyway, I won't go into that topic today.
As you know, Christmas and New Year's Eve are very close to each other and we usually celebrate New Year's Eve in Turkey. I know more about Christmas and Santa Claus than American movies. I saw the figure of Santa Claus in many movies I watched as a kid. A mysterious and fantastic figure who visits homes at Christmas and distributes gifts to children who have not been misbehaving for 1 year.
I think you know that the character inspired by Santa Claus is Santa Claus living in Demre, Antalya. Yes, you heard right. Santa Claus is a person who lives in Demre and is famous for this feature as he loves helping people. I know he was later canonized.
In 2011, when I was a theater actor in Antalya, I took part in a show that told the life story of Santa Claus. It was a show consisting of theatre, ballet, modern dance and a short film. We rehearsed for 3 months. The plan of the production company that organized the show was to travel to European countries, especially Germany. A giant open-air stage was built in the town hall of Antalya's Kemer district. We did all our rehearsals there. We had a very large team. Theater actors, ballerinas, dancers, film crew and technical team. We worked only on dance and theater stages for 3 months. The short film was already ready. The movie was projected onto the screen on stage and the play was shown as if it were a continuation of the movie. In fact, the timing was set as if the character of Santa Claus in the movie was moving from screen to scene.
The decors we used were also very good. In a scene where we reenact Santa's voyage, we were driving a large ship. It was a ship at least 4 meters long and 2 meters wide. It had a four-metre mast and a large sail, as well as a giant rudder.
We rehearsed at least 8 hours a day for 3 months. The show was now ready to be staged. To promote the show, the production decided to hold an introductory session for tour guides and agency owners who arranged clients for hotels in the area. We were very excited. We were finally able to play our first session. Finally the big day came and we played our first session to agents and tour guides. What happened then? This was our first and last session. Production and agency owners could not agree. I guess art succumbed to commerce.

Baby Birds Learning to Sing

Scientists from the universities of Calgary in Canada and Tsukuba in Japan discovered a dinosaur species thought to have lived 90 million years ago. The jawbone fossil belonging to this dinosaur was found in 1908 and was taken under protection in the Tashkent Geology Museum.
