Five Years Later: A Sequel

This story is a sequel to the movie entitled **"The Last Five Years**". Last Scene: Jamie: “I called Alise to help me pack my bags. I went downtown and closed the bank account. I'm not the only one who's hurting here. I don't know what the hell is left to do. You never saw how far the crack had opened. You never knew I had run out of rope, and I could never rescue you. No matter how I tried. All I could do was love you hard and let you go. God, I loved you so. So we could fight, or we could wait, or I could go. You never noticed how the wind had changed, I didn't see a way we both could win. Goodbye, Cathy, Goodbye.” Cathy: "Jamie is over, and Jamie is gone. Jamie's decided it's time to move on. Jamie has new dreams he's building upon. And I'm still hurting. Jamie arrived at the end of the line. Jamie's convinced that the problems are mine. Jamie is probably feeling just fine. And I'm still hurting. Jamie is over and where can I turn. Covered with scars I did nothing to earn. Maybe there's somewhere a lesson to learn. That wouldn't change the fact. That wouldn't speed the time. Once the foundations cracked. And I'm still hurting.” **5 Years Later On Cathy's Point Of View:** "I have moved on. I am fine now." I keep telling myself as I flip on to the next page of the book I am holding. I am currently reading the new published novel of Jamie, "Until She Was Gone." "Or am I?" I ask myself. It's been 5 years. It's been 5 years since he left me wondering what I did wrong, why he gave up so easily. I read the dedication page, the letters that was supposed to be for me, are all messages dedicated for Alise now. "That should be me." I whispered to myself. My phone rang the moment I closed the book. I can't help but to smile. "He really is a good writer", I thought to myself. He always has been. "Hey, love. I'll pick you up at 5 pm. See you, later." It was Adrian. The only guy who never gave up on me despite the fact that I was still holding on for Jamie, that there was still a chance for us to reconcile. But he continued to pursue me. He was there when everything was falling apart. He was with me, cheering on my side in every audition I attended. He was my number one supporter in every musical play I was a cast with. He never failed to make it to my shows. During the first year after Jamie left, it was the darkest moment of my life, but Adrian came and became the light I never expected to have. He believed that I can be more. He believed in my abilities, when I failed to believe in my own self. "Why is it so late for you to realize that you love me? After hurting me so badly? Now that I'm gone, you say that I'm the one?" I am rehearsing a line for my show this evening. I sit on my couch as I wait for Adrian. He's going to drive me to the venue, and support me on my show. After all the rejections I had, I am now able to get the lead role of any musical show I audition with. I already made my name in my chosen career. Directors are now the one picking me in their shows. "Congratulations! I'm so proud of you." "Thank you so much. I appreciate that you are here." Standing ovation. I am amused with the reactions of the audience as we take our final bow. The feeling of fulfillment is what I have after all the rehearsals we had for tonight's show. It was all worth it. After a long night, Adrian and I decided to have dinner at our favorite restaurant. "Hey, Cathy. There is another audition for a musical play. Why don't you try it? It's a musical adaptation from a book of a famous novelist in the city." "Who?" "I forgot the name. You should try it. I'm sure you'll get the lead role. Byeee." She ended the call without giving me specific details. Audition after audition. Show after show. This has been my routine for the last five years. It is tiring, but I don't feel tired at all. Maybe because I am pursuing what I love most. My passion for acting and singing. I fell in line with the other girls auditioning for the role. "Cathy Hiatt." The lady in red called me. "It's your turn now." I haven't been so nervous on an audition before. I entered the room and I saw him. The guy who made me question my worth. The same guy I hated for years because I loved him so badly. I didn't know I will see him today. They stopped laughing the moment they saw me on stage. I saw Jamie's reaction change when he saw me. But beside him was Alise. No sweat. I got the lead role. The play is for the musical adaptation of Jamie's novel "Until She Returned". A sequel of his bestseller novel, Until She Was Gone. Rehearsals day after day. I always saw him with Alise. Maybe they're married now. I thought. Until the day of the show came. Everyone is busy preparing for the big show tonight. "Why was it so easy for you to leave me, when all I did was love you unconditionally? Why do you have to come back now that I'm happy, is this a test for me?" All the people in the audience clapped as I belted the high note. I shed my tear. The moment we got off the stage, I cried. I couldn't hold it any longer. Seeing the man I loved for so many years with his new girl pains me. I wiped my tear when I saw that Jamie is coming to me. "Congratulations! I knew you are the perfect fit for the role." "Thank you. Congratulations, too. Jamie. Can we talk?" "About what?" "About what happened to us? Why did you leave me so easily?” He couldn't say a word. I know shouldn't have asked that. But this is the only chance I can get answers to my unanswered questions. For five years, I've been looking for answers. "I'm proud of who you have become. You've become the person I wanted you to be." "But aren't you even prouder if we're in each others' side? Like how we used to be. You said you loved me, but why did you gave up on us? Why did you threw it all away?” "I left not because I wanted to. I left because it wasn't healthy for the both of us anymore. Aren't you happy? You're successful now. We both are happy with our chosen career." "But what if you didn't leave me? I am the person I am today because I wanted you to regret your decisions. Sometimes I'm asking, what if you held on a little longer, will we be able to be where we are now? Wouldn't we be able to achieve our dreams together?” "Then we wouldn't be the person we are today." Tears began to fall. Not because of pain, hatred, or anger, but because I now understand why we parted ways. I needed to lose him in order to find myself. He needed to let me go, because someone will come to fight for me. He couldn't rescue me, because I had to rescue myself. He hugged me tight for the last time and we bid each other goodbye. We parted ways for the second time, but now with a clear mind and an open heart. Jamie's got Alice, and I have Adrian now.
