Sometimes I buy plants, sometimes plants full of flowers. I don't have very many but little by little I am expanding my small collection-garden at home. Some live longer, others seem to wither but leave us with the hope that their colorful and lively flowers will return again in another month, in another season of the year. And unfortunately some do not return, they die irremediably.
This is life. The cycle of life: birth, reproduction and death. And among those things we are living, showing our colors and also our dry leaves, almost like the plants themselves.
Well, I have a new plant, it just caught my attention. How could a plant with a flower as spectacular as this Bromeliad not catch my attention? I like them that way, different, with personality and so far I don't have any like that.
Here it is, a Bromeliad is now near the window, so that it has a lot of light, it likes light like me, like most, and I look at its small trunk and it is more than a green stem of a plant. It is literally a trunk, from which more layers and layers grow on the sides, it almost looks like a tiny banana tree or in some way reminds me of a pineapple.
Oh, and crowning that thick, rough stem, we have big, long, deep green leaves and the big flower, the jewel in the crown. An impressive orange-red flower that becomes the center of attention. Right now the envy of the rest of the pots seems like a beauty competition, who will be the prettiest?
Well, watching and researching this Bromeliad and its care, I discover a shocking detail: it is a magical flower. The magic is in its flowering process, because it will only bloom once in a lifetime. So this flower that we see will die, no matter how much you do, no matter how much you water it and take care of it. I can't do anything, when it withers and dies, it won't bloom never again. A flower with a death sentence. (We are in Halloween).
Apparently they make a lot of effort to show so much beauty, they must use all their energy to live life intensely until the end, because they know that their end will come. But while there she is, shiny and wonderful, turned into the queen of any green and natural space.
But all is not lost, because otherwise this species would become extinct. If we look below, now it is not yet well perceived or differentiated, but some sprouts appear, some small buds, so they say... The mother plant will leave us its little children that will grow more until we can separate them from the plant, (they will abandon the nest or this pot), to become a big plant each, and hopefully in a few years?! I read that about four years, we will have one or two identical plants, again other large and impressive red flowers will return to decorate this same space.
A beautiful plant, the bromeliad that despite its dictated destiny leaves us its heritage, more beautiful flowers, more intense life full of color, and more hope by reminding us that after death life returns, with strength and joy. Nature gives us a lot of beauty, good vibes and the best of gifts, more life.
Yes usually plants can bloom every year or season, but this one no, a special system, very original, sometimes if I have to choose among all plants I see, I buy the different one like this Bromeliad.
Bromeliad is sure one impressive plant. I was also shocked to read about one and only flowering time. I had one of those a few years back. I never got to the joy of growing new platns, cause I let it at home or a few months while I was locked up in NL during pandemic. I will try again one day. All the best with yours 💙
I didn't know but I watched a garden video on YouTube and I learned that, but it's ok because I think I can see now very small sprouts that next year might become new plants, hope so!
A big hug and try again, it's a very nice natural decoration! 😉💚
Do you know what type of orchid do you have? If the usual Phalaenopsis, they usually grow flower spikes in Autumn, when there is a drop in temperature, ready to flower in Winter. Many are forced to bloom though and for a few years after buying it they will flower at the same time of the year when you purchased it in bloom 💙
Oh really? well what I have it is blooming every single spring, very on time jaja three years in a row... so not sure it is that type you say but it is awesome to have orchids the rest of the year too!
It will also depend on when is the colder time in your country. Dropping temperatures usually give them the signal to start growing flower spike, although from that point until flowers open it is usually around 3 month on average
I think it's a tropical plant, adapted now to many different places, and it became more common, so it's normal you can see them too around. Good because it's cool and beautiful!
I'm no flower expert but I didn't know there was a one and done flower. That's pretty remarkable and cool how it gives an opportunity for a new plant.
