Chicago: elevated views at the Hancock Tower (III)
Hello! Let's continue in Chicago, the windy city. This time almost from the sky...
After taking in impressive skylines and plenty of architecture, we're still impressed by the number of towering buildings each with their own style and character. Giving the city of Chicago an unique personality.
And we continue to enjoy the views but this time from just one of those iconic buildings in the city, the fourth tallest tower found in the city's most commercial artery, the most glamorous avenue, on 875 North Michigan Ave., The Magnificent Mile. There to one side almost before the Lake Shore we found that black building. Can you distinguish between all of them? The one that seems taller, black and with two antennae on each side.
It is the John Hancock Tower, which looks like a simple dark, modern, glass-enclosed building that gives the impression of being surely occupied by many offices. But in reality it is one of the hallmarks of the windy city, with restaurants and shops in the lower part, for any passerby and then if we are more curious, why not go inside?
In a luxurious and illuminated reception, the well-dressed building staff tells us how many people can go in each elevator and which floor we can go to. Almost at the top, where the restaurant is, "The Signature Room & Lounge". So we go up at a dizzying speed, which is felt in the ears, the body seems to rise in the air as if floating for a second, and suddenly the doors of the elevator open on the 95th floor! and we are amazed.
A luxurious carpeted space, open to where there is more light, more people are seen and more noise is heard. The noise of dishes and intermingled conversations. There is a constant coming and going while the newcomers remain standing, but without expecting anything, just looking at those giant and impressive windows.
Only those huge crystals separate us from the void, from the blue of the sky and the blue of the lake. All those views around. And there is even more, we can go up some small stairs from where we can see even more that vertiginous perspective towards the city, a sea of buildings of different sizes and heights makes us feel tiny. As we count thousands of boats and boats moored on the shores of Lake Michigan, the marina seems to encompass everything. Confronted only by Navy Pier, an amusement park that we will also visit soon, you have to go down there too, and other complexes that make us realize that urban space allows contact with nature, pleasure and enjoyment from different places and in different ways.
While the pianist entertains the spectacular moment, people remain seated at their tables, or choosing new dishes to try enjoying their brunch menu at that time, in a special and unique setting. We lose track of everything, we don't know what to do, whether to turn around, sit down, or continue glued to that glass tempered by the intense sunlight that comes and we feel it closer than ever.
Everything seems out of reality, we hear a soft soundtrack, which evokes us to another time, and to a place where we want to be, there is food that invites us to stay, it smells and it looks. The views captivate us and the atmosphere becomes irresistible. It seems like a dream, like we're not really there inside the Hancock Tower. Why not have a cocktail and continue enjoying those views of the most impressive city?
There at 95 floors high, or 96 if we go to the top of the local bar, how many times do we go up that high? And from those heights we can see the lake and a part of the city downtown, which again from another unforgettable perspective, this time higher, makes us fall in love again with Chicago. Until next time...
