Who does the crown fit is a question that has been known since ages because it is a question that gives meaning to issues bothering on power, politics and government at large. It can also go beyond government and politics; it flows into the family and even into our day to day affairs with others. It is a question that comes out when there is an issue of who will take over an office, an executive post etc and when this happens, the outcome or result may be positive or negative.

The politics of the world has shown that it has and will never be an easy thing for any man/woman to take over any political office because of the way and manner the run the game of politics. The just-concluded American election shifted the focus of the world from Africa as a continent where power tussle has become a do or die affair. We all saw how one man wanted to hold the whole of America to ransom because he felt the election result was rigid even after he lost in the law court. This scenario has always played out in Africa almost every time an election is conducted. We see African presidents who have spent over 20 years in office and are above 70 years of age still fighting and angling for power by all means necessary.

How do we correct this abnormality? Is it by the zoning of office i.e. sharing the presidential seat within the regions of the country? Since 1999, the people of Nigeria have always witnessed election result cancellation or complete rejection since it did not favour the ruling party. This has gone on for so long and a lot of elites within the corridors of power are calling for total zoning of the presidential office because it is as if a particular region has dominated that office making it unacceptable for the majority who are yet to have a representation of their region on the presidential seat.

A country like Nigeria that has over five hundred ethnic groups with over two million languages will surely embrace this idea of zoning but the problem is not about zoning, it is about which zone would allow the other to take the seat. This is where the saying; who does the cap fit comes into play. Politics in Nigeria has become a game played only by those who are ready to soil their hands even as they unapologetically step on people's toes all in the name of winning an election.

The last general election in Nigeria which saw the current president take over from former President Goodluck Jonathan was highly predicted to be an election that would have led to the collapse of the entire nation but one remarkable thing happened on the day of the election. The sitting president who was the command in chief of the armed forces of the nation had enough reasons to contest the result of that election but because he was aware of the plans of those who wanted to seize the opportunity to cause trouble in the country if he had contested the result but he placed a call across to the other candidate and congratulated him even before the last vote was counted.

This singular action of this man quenched the fire that was already raging even though a lot of people felt disappointed and some called him a weak leader. I learnt a very big and important lesson on that day. After the election and handover, he was asked why he did not contest the result of the election even when he had overwhelming evidence that showed that the election was rigged in some areas. In his response, he said; the blood of any Nigerian is more important than his political interest and should not be wasted. This statement endeared him to a lot of people both within the country and beyond.

When the right person takes the office of the president, he/she will not feel comfortable enough to watch the blood of the citizens he/she sow to protect get spilt on the streets or even outside the shores of his/her country but when a tyrant takes over, the reverse is the case. He/she will commit all sorts of crime without any atom of respect to human life and dignity.

We can only have the right person in the office when we try to remove favouritism and nepotism from amongst us because whatever affects the other person will surely affect us one day. Do not say because you want the zoning, you now elect a person you truly know and understand that he/she has nothing to offer if elected. It is high time that Africa started looking at their elective posts with a clear sense of dignity and call to duty. Whoever the crown fits should wear it as longs it was not forced to fit. Let this be a clarion call to all African countries and the world at large.
