Please, I Will Do It Later.

Whenever you say “I will do it tomorrow”, you are indirectly given room for procrastination and laziness. We have heard that procrastination is the killer of time and yet we constantly do it every day of our life. When was the last time you were asked to do something or that you had something you want to do and you went straight to do that thing? An incident happened some days ago and that has pushed me into writing this article. I went out with some friends to during the weekend just to wine and dine, as we were enjoying ourselves one of our friend got a call or should I say a beep on his mobile phone. At the moment we did not notice or bother to ask him what or why his phone was beeping. After some time, his phone beeped again but this time I took notice of it and called his attention to his phone because, after the first beep, he just dropped the phone on the table so I was forced to call his attention. When I called his attention to the phone I was moved to look at the phone screen to know who was beeping him. Pardon my manners but we have been close friends for a very long time so it was not a big deal for me to check out who was beeping him.

When I showed him his phone, he looked at me and said this “guy relax I will call back later”. I look at him in utter surprise because I was imagined why or what made him say that instead of collecting the phone and stepping out to call his sister back who has been the one beeping him all the while. He also told me to just forget the beep that he wants to enjoy himself. At this second statement, I became demoralized. I walked back to my seat and sat down. The funniest thing was that he asked me to drop his phone on the table which I did without any complaint. Just about ten minutes later, his phone began to beep again but this time it was an unregistered number so I did not bother again to inform him since he turned down his sisters beep, I already knew he was not going to attend to that one. As the day was gradually whining down and everyone was already preparing to leave, his phone beeped but this time it was his sister so since he was sitting down because no one was dancing again, he took the phone and looked at it for some time then stood up to go outside just to call her back. I was not happy because it has been more than two hours since the sister started beeping him and that was the reason I felt uneasy when he said that he will call back later. After some time, he rushed into the lounge with a falling face and instantly said he is leaving. Being the only person who has been following the whole event of his phone beeping, I stood up and rushed after him. When I enquired what the problem was, he looked at me and said: “I should have called back when you asked me to”. That statement got me worried and I pushed him to tell me what the issue was. He then said that his sister was calling him to tell him that their younger brother was involved in a ghastly motor accident and that the major reason she was calling was that the doctor said that he needed an urgent blood transfusion because he lost a lot of blood. So I told him that we should rush down to the hospital at once but he looked at me and said: “my brother is dead”. It was the highest shocking news for me because I could imagine what was going on in his mind. Before I could get myself to understand what had happened, he then said “if I had picked called my sister back when she called me, I would have donated the blood to save my younger brother”, meanwhile he was already crying. Immediately I understood that he was feeling like it was his fault that the brother died because they could get a matching blood sample for him. The rest of the story is history. Now, if you look at the whole event that happened you could say that it was his fault right? If he had called the sister back at the right time instead of procrastinating, probably he would have been able to donate some pints of blood for his brother or he would have been able to at least see his younger brother once more. Your case may not be the same as what happened to my friend just last week, but this should serve as a warning to every one of us. Procrastination is dangerous therefore we must not give room for it. A lot of people have lost great life-changing opportunities because they used the statement “I will do it later”. One thing we must understand is that once an opportunity passes us by we will never be able to get it back.

You can go for that job, vacation and do that act of kindness today because life is so uncertain for one to keep procrastinating. Be wise and learn from other people’s mistake.
