We Were Taken Unaware...

***Just like the birth*** ***of a newborn, we celebrated your coming with dancing and great joy which was followed*** ***by merriment of all kind.*** ***With our mouths*** ***filled with gratitude, we thanked the creator with songs of praise even in the*** ***presence of our enemies.*** ***But… our joy, hope*** ***and expectations were cut short because of the visitation of mans greatest*** ***enemy through that deadly foe called coronavirus...*** With celebrations still ranging in various corners of the world for the New Year as we walked through two beautiful months while praying and hoping for things to work out for us all, but the moment we marched into March, scary news spread like great wildfire flashing through our televisions, radios and newspapers of various types. The internet was set on fire with images of people who were ravaged by this deadly virus. Gradually, the streets turned into burial grounds as we saw our mortuaries get filled up by corps. The whole world marvelled and was pushed into great panic and suffering. In no distant time, we started getting information’s of partial lockdown which led to total lockdown in various countries of the world. Our hopes and expectations were dashed on the wall right in our presence. The year 2020 has been a year of great trials and tribulations for every single person living on this planet Earth. We all were faced with challenges of various sizes. As the world was still fighting coronavirus, Africa was also fighting it coupled with poverty and hunger which the virus brought through lockdowns. In my country Nigeria, the year 2020 would be an unforgettable year for every citizen of the country and those who are following the happenings in Nigeria. As the was battling the virus, we were not only fighting it but we were also fighting injustice, poverty, hunger, police brutality which led to the end sars protest that claimed the lives of innocent youths who were protesting against the evils of bad governance. We were massacred by those who had the responsibility of protecting us while seating and singing our national anthem right there in our streets and yet no one has been indicted till date. It was a year the eyes of the world was opened and those who felt death was meant for only the poor and the needy had a rethink because the wave of coronavirus swept and killed more of those in the upper class, especially in Nigeria. The death of George Floyd vibrated through the streets and corners of America. It did not end there as other countries joined in this protest against man’s inhumanity to man. I would say that the death of Floyd opened the eyes of many to the wickedness of some of our security personnel’s and the carefree attitude of our government to serving justice when it is deserved. Economically, the world was placed on hold and this caused a great reduction in the world economy ranging from an increase in unemployment to the fall of the price of crude and other world commodities. So many countries have gone into serious debt because of excessive borrowing in other to help their citizen and reduce hunger and poverty rate. Nigeria is one of such country and yet our government is still borrowing with no plans put in place which will serve as a means of payment. The year 2020 has been that year everyone will not wish to have again although, to some, the year was a great blessing to them and their entire families. ***We have seen that change is the only thing constant in life.
