At first, I thought it was all social media lies and panic until I check the tweeter handle of the central bank of Nigeria which is the apex bank and the controlling head of all other banks. I am not pained because they placed a crypto ban rather it is laughable. After all, I cannot understand the rationale in their decision to ban crypto even at this stage when the whole world is gradually adopting crypto trading as a possible way out for nations. As I scanned through the memo which was containing the directives to all the other banks, I was moved to check what the outlined as the reason behind this ban. To my greatest surprise, I found out that the government of Nigeria said that cryptocurrencies were been used to sponsor terrorism and terrorist groups so that is the reason for the ban.

They also said that if for any reason one engages in crypto trading and on the process he is scammed that there is no form security for them so because of that the only way out is to ban it so that their citizens will not fall into the hands of scammers. Even as I am writing this article, it still feels like a dream to me that a country like Nigeria that is underdeveloped will take such step while other developed countries are seriously grabbing crypto and everything it has to offer with both hands.

If they are saying that cryptocurrencies have been a means for terrorism sponsorship, does it mean that the 9/11 attack on America was sponsored by crypto and yet American government have not banned crypto? What happens in Nigeria is that we have leaders who are always looking for a way to impoverish their citizens as a way of keeping them perpetually hungry and under their evil control. These old men have seen that youths are making headway through crypto and they are afraid that they cannot get people to hijack ballot boxes for then on the Election day and without that, it will be difficult for them to win any elective office. It is so heartbreaking that when other countries are making policies to encourage crypto trading and every form of crypto dealings just as a way to put their country on the forefront in the world economy, my country Nigeria is banning it because of men who have run out of ideas on how to take the country to a better height.   The question I must ask Nigerian leaders is this; what plans have you put in place as a way of cushioning the effect of unemployment which the ban will cause? It is easy to say you have banned this or that, but if Nigerian leaders have the interest of their citizens at heart, they could have at least considered those youths who have taken their time to learn crypto trading just to make sure that they survive in a country where no one thinks of their wellbeing. Now, this leaves me to say that Nigeria is not a democratic country because, for such decision to take place, it must have to pass through the senate where proper deliberation will be taken in a bid to come to a better conclusion and it would have to pass through the first, second and the final reading before it becomes a binding law, but the reverse is the case. This decision was never discussed by the senate or by its constituent committee rather is was a sole decision of some people who feel that 2023 is fast approaching so they must do anything possible to remain in office even if it means removing food from the mouth of its citizens.   We are left now with nothing right now and with this ban, the rate of unemployment has increased which is a gateway to increase the rate of crime. During the #Endsars saga in Nigeria, I remembered telling a friend that if we want true and a better change in our country, I told him that the protest must have to continue otherwise our leaders will push us in a corner where it will be very hard for us to even gather the momentum to protest again. The last protest was and should have been our gateway to freedom if we had continued. After all the people killed by the Nigerian military, the government is yet to make a tentative statement about the killing even after denying all the facts brought up by CNN. Now, looking at this ban, how do we think we will get through with a protest this time?

We are just like a plane on a landing mode without any landing gear in place. What this means is that we are either going to belly land or crash land and in both options, survival is certainly not sure. A country that about looking for any opportunity to borrow money from other countries without any laid down plan on how to generate the money which they will use to offset their debt. For me, the ban of crypto in Nigeria is a bad move and the last straw that broke the camel’s back. If nothing is done at this point, we are all heading straight to doom.
