According to many doctors, "Addiction" is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity, or substance, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.
Once people are addicted to something it's really hard to stop. A person can be addicted to anything from heroin, cocaine, weed, alcohol, gaming, etc. Once a person is addicted to something it starts hampering with one's normal life. One will give priority to the thing he is addicted to before everything else. Family, relations, and financial conditions are affected. One will start spending all the time and money in one's addiction. Most of the time, the person wants the feeling of euphoria he gets when he consumed such things and he wants that feeling every time he can. One also needs money to purchase the thing or substance he is addicted to. And once all his means are exhausted one may indulge in various criminal activity to earn money.
Many rehabs are there, that help a person get rid of his addiction. But many cases are there where they again go back to addiction after getting out of rehab. Everyone wants to get rid of addiction and we should help them mentally and not see them as some criminals. Once you are addicted to something you will know how hard it is to leave the addiction.
So how do we avoid getting addicted to something? I would say free mind is the beginning of addiction. We should study, play, or have a hobby and do it in your free time. Resting is necessary but sitting idle often is not. And we should not try things for the sake of trying.
