God’s Heritage For His Children *Text: Isa. 54: 17* “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord” (NKJV) Believers have inheritance in Christ and that is good news indeed. Beyond the joy of getting to spend eternity in heaven with God, one of the things we look forward to in heaven, is the possession of our inheritance that awaits us there and I pray for you that yours will not be given to someone else in Jesus name. Talking about inheritance, our text today talks to us about some of the inheritance that God as provisioned for us as His children. This particular inheritance is part of God’s protection and preservation package for His children. The passage says that no weapon formed against us shall prosper, another word for “prosper” as it is used in this passage is “prevail”. So we can paraphrase that sentence this way, “no weapon formed against you shall prevail”. No weapon means no weapon, be it physical, or demonic. A weapon is an instrument of warfare and usually it can be very deadly, its purpose is to maim, to kill or to destroy. This world is a battle field and the devil tells us that our primary foe is the devil and so our primary battle is not against flesh and blood but against the devil and his demonic agents. And in that battle the devil makes use of various weapons against us to help him gain victory over us. Our text however assures us that no weapon used by devil or his agents – whether human or demonic will prevail over us. In other words, God has committed Himself to protecting His children against any weapon of wickedness that may rise up against them at any point in time. Secondly the passage also talks about tongues rising up against us in judgement and assures that for us as God’s children, God will rise up against these tongues to condemn them. This includes those who may rise with the intention to slander us, to speak against us in the place of judgment or in the place where we are being considered for one favor or another, to oppose us openly by being a voice of dissent against whatever position we take on any issue. We are assured from God’s word that such people will fail in their mission because God will rise up to condemn them thereby making their words or comment against us to lack credibility. The summary of what this text is saying is that as God’s children we are unstoppable and we are indestructible, that certainly is good news. Note that it is not our righteousness that qualifies us for all these but God’s righteousness. It is not our acts of righteousness that makes us children of God, the bible says that our righteousness amounts to nothing before God, in fact it says that our righteousness is detestable, it is like filthy rags before God (Isa. 64: 6). Rather, it is God’s righteousness attained by faith in Christ Jesus that makes us children of God. This righteousness is available to all who will surrender their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Lord and Savior. Refuse therefore to be intimidated by any person or power that is boasting of great things against you, they are only exhibiting the traits of their father the devil but they are defeated already and you need not fear them, all you need to do is to be sure of your sonship status in Christ. And you can be sure that no satanic onslaught against your life will prevail in Jesus name. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Father thank you for your love for me, thank you for the grace of adoption as your son and thank you for all the inheritance you have provisioned for me in Christ Jesus. 2. Thank you Father for your protection and preservation package for my life which includes protection against any weapon of wickedness fashioned against me or my family 3. Father, weapons in this case includes voices of adversaries, opposition, or acts of wickedness generally, none of them shall prevail against me in Jesus name. 4. Father it is your righteousness that secures for me access to your protection and preservation package may your righteousness never be compromised in my life in Jesus name 5. Gift & Greed ***Text: John 14: 27*** “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (NLT) A gift is an act of benevolence from one person to another. It can be financial, material and it can even be a highly coveted position. A gift is not earned and is totally at the discretion of the giver. He decides who to give, what to give and the quantity or the quality of what to give. The bible encourages us to give and this is communicated to us through many passages in the bible. For example, Acts 20: 35 says, “And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Every true child of God therefore must be a giver because to do otherwise is to be disobedient to the word of God. The Almighty God Himself, our heavenly Father is a giver. Acts 17: 25 says, that He gives life and breath to all and satisfies every need. Out text reveals to us another thing that God gives to man. It says that God gives us peace of mind and heart. Peace is a priceless gift that no one other than God can give. The world cannot give it, in fact the world itself needs peace. This gift is priceless not because it is cheap but because it is so valuable and precious that no price can adequately equate its value. As precious as it is however it comes to us freely from God. There is no doubt that this is a very appropriate gift for us as sojourners in this world. A world where peace is elusive, all we see is conflicts, wars, unrest and destructive acts all over. History has shown that man lacks capacity to live at peace with himself not to talk of living at peace with another. We engage ourselves in a lot of self destructive acts and the way of peace we do not know (Isa. 59: 8). Yet this peace is a necessity for a good and healthy life because it frees our minds and hearts from fear and also from being troubled. It gives rest to the weary and it is an important recipe for wellness and long life. This peace of God will not be absent in your life in Jesus name. This gift of God is available to all who will genuinely turn away from the life sin and rebellion and seek God. The moment you turn to God in faith His peace floods your life, you will feel it and you will know it. Receive that peace now in Jesus name. Amen. Shalom **Prayer Points** 1. It is a state of mind in which, no matter how much power, wealth or possessions a person has, he is never contented or satisfied. It is an insatiable desire for acquiring more and more things than necessary in life. Thus a greedy person is one who is never satisfied with the power or material things that he has. He looks with envy on what others have and wished that they were His own. He is selfish and covetous. He will do everything to satisfy his greed. He is prepared to defraud, cheat, deceive, prostitute, betray his loved ones and country and even kill to satisfy his greed. Thus, greed is a very bad thing. In the bible, we are told of the greed of Ahab and Gehazi and the catastrophic effects it had on them and their families. This is a warning for us to avoid greed and practice its opposite: self-control, self-restraint, contentment and charity. **The Significance of Ahab's Greed** Ahab's greed, which led him and his wife to kill in order to satisfy his greed, lies in the disastrous consequences it had on him and his family. Greed is s sin which separates man from God. Thus, Ahab was separated from God by his greed. He found himself an enemy of God when he told Elijah: "Have you found me, O my enemy" His guilty conscience automatically made him an enemy of God, here represented by the Prophet Elijah. Elijah told Ahab that his greed has made him to sell himself to the devil by doing what is evil in God's sight. Hence, through greed, Ahab became a slave to the devil. Ahab's greed brought divine punishment upon himself and his wife. Elijah predicted that dogs will lick Ahab's blood by Naboth's vineyard on Jezereel and also that dogs would eat Jezebel's body. Ahab's greed affected his family as the divine punishment was extended to his family. Elijah predicted that evil would befall his family and all his male children (that is, the dynasty of Omri) would be wiped out. Ahab's greed and the effect on him and his family shows that there is a need to curb greed which is rampant in our society today. Students are prepared to cheat and indulge in examination malpractice to get certificates which they do not merit. Parents, looking with envy on the success of their neighbour's children are prepared to buy examination questions for their children to pass and get certificates which they are not qualified for. Men and women are prepared to cheat, defraud and kill to get rich overnight. Some do engage in Advanced Fee Fraud (419) and drug trafficking in order to get easy money to satisfy their greed. All these are seriously affecting the moral fabric of our nations in West Africa. Greed for power exhibits itself when politicians rig elections and use the military to topple legitimate government to acquire power. Civil and rebel wars are fought between parties who have insatiable lust for power. The results are social, political and economic devastation on the people, the country and the WestAfrican sub-region at large. As Christians, we should make concerned efforts not only to condemn greed as Elijah did, but also be good examples in modest living through self-control, contentment and charity. **The Significance of Gehazi's Greed:** Gehazu suffered adversely just like Ahab did. His greed which he though was secret was exposed and he was publicly disgraced, thus implying that greed can be uncovered and can lead to public disgrace. God punished Gehazi for his greed. He was cursed with the leprosy of Naaman and immediately he became leprous. The curse of leprosy was to be transferred to him and his generations forever. Thus, greed affects the lives of innocent people as well. Gehazi lost his job as he was dismissed by Elijah for his greed. The leprosy which he inherited as a result of his greed, made him a social outcast since leprosy was regarded as an unclean disease and lepers stayed only on the outskirts of the town and were not allowed there. God Will Finish It *Text: Phil. 1: 6* “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (NKJV) The Almighty God is a finisher of whatever He has started He does not do anything half way. God has capacity to complete that which He has started. He will not begin anything unless He has the intention to finish it. Jesus Christ revealed to us in the gospels that one of the reason why it is not good to begin something and not be able to finish it is because it will attract mockery (Luke 14: 29) and certainly our God is above is mockery, so He will always finish what He started. This characteristic of God to always finish whatever it is He started is well known to the Apostle Paul and that gave him the assurance to say the words of our bible text for this morning. The bible assures that every god and perfect gift is from God (James 1: 17) and that includes good works as well. God is full of good works and these good works He performs freely in the life of His children. These good works are meant to show forth more of God’s glory in our lives, they manifest in form of miracle, supernatural provision, grace, answer to prayer, one act of wonder or another. Because God’s timing is not the same as ours, it may appear that God is slow but He is not, when you do not see the manifestation you wish to see in your life quickly you may be tempted to think that maybe God has abandoned His work in your life, but He has not. You need to be patient to allow God to continue His work in you and to finish it and surely He will. As a result of this truth therefore, don’t give up on that breakthrough you are praying for, don’t stop believing God to take away that infirmity in your life, don’t give up on that change you desire to see in your life financially, spiritually or otherwise, don’t give up on yourself because God is not done with you yet. He is working out something good in your life and if you continue to trust, believe and remain in me He will finish it and all the waiting will be worth it and any agony associated with the waiting will be forgotten completely. The day of Jesus Christ talks about the day of Christ’s return. There is a great work of God going on inside of every child of God to make sure that every impurity in our life is removed thereby making us holy and perfect on the day of Christ’s return, remember the bible tells us that Jesus Christ is coming for a church without spot or wrinkle, who is it that will make us spotless and without any blemish or wrinkle? It is certainly not us but God. When we remain in Him therefore and cooperate with Him, He will surely finish His work such that by the time Christ returns for His church, He will find us perfect and ready to go with Him into His glory. You will not be left out on that day in Jesus name. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father I give you praise because you are a finisher, you do not do things half way, when you start anything you will finish it 2. Father I give you praise because I know that the good work you have started in me you will finish it in Jesus name. 3. Thank you Father that you are not done with me yet, that which you are presently working out secretly in my life and family will come to manifestation in Jesus name. 4. Father please grant me grace to patiently wait for you to finish all that you have started and working on presently in my life and family in Jesus name 5. Father please help me to remain in you and to cooperate with you to the end so that you will be able to complete your work of making me holy and perfect on the day of Jesus Christ. Seek The Lord *Text: 1 Chro. 16: 11-12* “Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore! Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth” (NKJV) In this life people are always seeking for something, and so in that sense everybody is a seeker. Some are seeking for influence, some are seeking for wealth, some are seeking for happiness, some are seeking the things that will bring real satisfaction and fulfilment in life, they have tried many things but yet to lay their hands on that thing that truly satisfies and some are seeking for power. The things we seek for in life is determined by the challenges that confronts us, the problems we are going through. So in other words the things we seek for in life are things we hope or we believe will be solution to the challenges confronting us presently. It can therefore be very frustrating if we spend time, energy and in some cases money to seek for something, only to discover after we secure it that it does not provide the desired answer to our question. That means that work done is zero and the seeking continues. In all of these however, there is one thing or rather one person to seek and if you will find Him, He will give you lasting and permanent solution to whatever may be the challenge or the problem confronting you and that is God. Our text today admonishes us to seek the Lord and His strength, because when you successfully secure the presence of God, all pain is ended, burdens are lifted and every siege or problems melt away. Beyond seeking the Lord we are encouraged to seek His strength, His strength is all we need to confront the trials of life and to come out successful. His strength is all we need to stay strong and positive in a world where we are surrounded by many negative forces that tend to weaken our faith promote fear in our lives. In seeking the Lord and His strength we are reminded to remember His works, His wonders and His judgements. These are factors that will inspire us in our resolve to seek for Him. When you remember the mighty and the miraculous works of God either in your life or in the life of others, you are encouraged to seek Him for fresh or greater manifestations. How then do you seek Him? You seek Him in His word, spend time to read and study His word, take note of His instructions for you and endeavor to obey them. Secondly you seek Him in the place of prayer and this of course includes worship and thanksgiving. Spend quality time to worship and to give thanks to Him for what He has already done and is doing in your life. Prayer provides the opportunity to talk to God just as a child will talk to his father and learning to talk regularly in this way will create a strong bond or intimacy between you and God. Seeking the Lord is not a one off activity, it is not for a season, it is forever. Receive grace to seek Him all the days of your life and receive the benefit available to those that seek Him in Jesus name. Amen. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father please forgive me for those times when I deviated away from you in seeking for solution to certain challenges of my life 3. The Convenant 2 God's covenant with Abraham rested on divine initiative. It is God who calls us into a relationship. What is required, which Abraham did and which his descendants were expected to do, is to respond positively to God's gracious act. God's covenant with Abraham, being the first of its kind, opened a new relationship in God's revelation to mankind. Henceforth, man will be in perpetual covenant relationship with God. The Abrahamic convenant on its part was signalled by a new sign, the sign of circumcision, which, when broken, excluded one from the covenant community and hence from the promise to possess a land, to become a great nation and to be a blessing to all mankind. The Abrahamic convenant was also signalled by a new divine name: El Shaddai, (God Almighty) and a new name for those to whom the covenant was made, (Abram changed to Abraham and Sarai, changed to Sarah). **The Significance of the fulfillment of God's covenant with Abraham** God fulfilled His covenant promise to Abraham as a result of his faith in Him. The promise was made when Abraham was seventy five (75) years old, and it was fulfilled when Abraham was a hundred years old. Thus, Abraham had to wait for twenty five (25) years for God to fulfill His promise to Him. Throughout the whole period, Abraham remained steadfast and firm in his faith in the Lord that a child of His promise would be born to him. Inspire of the advanced age of his wife and himself, Abraham believed and the Lord thereby fulfilled His promise with the birth of Isaac. For this remarkable faith of Abraham, he had been called the father of the faithfuls of all times. The lesson is that we must not waver in God's promise to help us solve our problems. When the fulfillment of the divine promise delays, we must not give up. We must not surrender our faith to fear and doubt. We must remain steadfast till the promise is fulfilled. In the process of waiting, we learn useful lessons about patience, perseverance and endurance. **God's convenant with Israel** The covenant between God and Israel followed from his convenant with Abraham. God's covenant promise to Abraham was that his descendants, the Israelites, would be a blessing to all mankind. This blessing consisted in the knowledge of the law, which expressed the will of God. The people before the time of Abraham did not know the law and therefore did not behave in the way that God wanted. Thus , God promised the law to be made available to all mankind through Abraham and his descendants. With the knowledge of the law, all mankind would come to do God's will, and there would be perfect harmony in the relationship between God and man, and between human beings themselves. The law was given to the Israelites during the covenant making ceremony at Mount Sinai. First, God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt and brought her to the wilderness of Sinai. The people were consecrated for the convenant ceremony. After the convenant terms (the law) had been read and the people promised to obey, there was the covenant ratification ceremony, which made the law legal and binding on the Israelites. **The Significance of the Oppression of the Israelites in Egypt** The fact that the Israelites suffered in Egypt meant that suffering is part of human experience. But God would not allow us to suffer indefinitely. He knows of our suffering and in due course. He will come and deliver us as He did to the Israelites. The lesson is that we must not despair in times of suffering. God is always at hand to save us. Watch out for part 3 Shalom! *MEMORIZE:* In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Isaiah 6:1 *BIBLE READING* ISAIAH 6:1-4 1. In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. *MESSAGE* Many preachers have commonly interpreted the first verse of our Bible passage today to mean that King Uzziah was probably a satanic force that blocked Isaiah from seeing God. Some would even pray that everything representing Uzziah in their lives should die. This is so far from the truth. lf you read 2 Chronicles 26:1-23, you will realise he was not a devil. Uzziah became a king at 16. He was a humble king who depended on God. He followed the right steps of his father, Amaziah. He invented assorted war equipment and became very popular and influential. However, pride set in and he became full of himself. So one day, he went into the temple to burn incense to God, a duty meant for Priests alone. Azariah, the high priest and eighty other priests tried to stop him, all to no avail. Then God struck him with leprosy. So he had to live in a secluded house outside the city until he died. As you grow older, don’t develop a bad character and drop the good attributes you have developed over the years. Learn from the story of Uzziah. Maintain your walk with God. The Power of The Word *Text: Heb. 4: 12* “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (NKJV) The bible is a book, but it is a book like no other book. It is a book that stands in a world of its own and is totally incomparable with any other. One of the major difference between the bible and any other book is that unlike the words in any other book, the words in the bible is alive and powerful. Our Lord Jesus Christ saying the same thing expressed it this way “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6: 63b) The words of the bible are not dead or inactive words, they are actually living and very powerful. And for those who know how to engage it properly, it delivers amazing and outstanding results. Results that are out of this world. In an attempt to describe just how powerful the word of God is, our text compares the word of God to a two edged sword. A two edged sword is only at its best when it is as sharp as it can be. In that state, it can be very deadly, nothing that comes across it goes without receiving at least a mark. To describe just how powerful and effective the word of God can be, our text says that even when the double edged sword is at its best, the word of God is sharper. There is no double edged sword for instance that can pierce the soul, but the word of God conveniently pierces not only the soul but the spirit as well. Thereby revealing the thoughts and intents of the heart. Now whoever is holding a double edged sword must hold it carefully and use it also with a lot of care because it cuts both ways and so the one holding is also at risk of being harmed by it. In the same way the word of God impacts not only the one hearing it but also the one ministering it as well. Both the preacher and the teacher of God’s word and those listening to it are impacted in the same way. This places both the preacher and the teacher of the word and those listening to them at the same level before God. They will both be judged by the same word and they will both be blessed by the same word to the same level if they engage it properly and apply it appropriately to their situation. Don’t attempt to hide anything about yourself from God and His word because when you come under the word, it reveals all that you may be trying to hide about yourself. That is the reason why you will seat listening to the word from a preacher that you have never met before and it will as if someone has gone ahead to reveal everything about you to the preacher. That is the reason why so many become very uncomfortable whenever they are exposed to the true word of God, because it brings to the surface things about their life that they would have preferred should remain hidden. The proper attitude to God’s word therefore is to cooperate with it and allow it to expose all that needs to be exposed in your life and as it is exposed, don’t resist it, don’t deny it, don’t argue with it but rather submit to it and ask God to set you free completely from unpleasant issues and to cleanse you totally. If you are willing to cooperate with the word of God in this way, your life will be the better for it and you will not be far from the kingdom of God. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Father thank you for the power in your word and the result that it delivers in the life of men, even I my own life and family. 2. Father through the mirror of your word please expose every ungodly thoughts and intents in my heart and may the same word cleanse me from them all in Jesus name 3. Father by your word humanity will be condemned and by your word also humanity will be justified, may I be justified by your word and not be condemned in Jesus name 4. Father may the light of your word consistently reveal to me my true identity in you in Jesus name 5. Father as your word expose what needs to be exposed in my life, help me not to resist it, not to deny it but to submit totally to it so that it can totally transform me into the image of your Son in Jesus name. The Convenant A covenant is a bond or agreement which binds two parties in a relationship of trust and obedience. The parties may be of equal or unequal rank. An example of a covenant between equals was the one between David and Jonathan in the Book of Samuel. The covenant between God and Abraham and between God and Israel, are instances of agreements between unequals. In any covenant, whether between equals or not, there are obligations or duties to be carried out by both parties. If it is between equals, there is mutual understanding to help and protect each other. If it is among unequals, the stringer partner who initiates the covenant, promises to protect the interest of the weaker partner in return for his complete loyalty and obedient trust. Abraham's obedient trust, when God called him to go to an unknown place He would show Him, led God to make a covenant with him. Out of Abraham came the children of Israel, with whom God made another covenant at Mount Sinai in the time of Moses. When the old convenant failed, God promised another convenant; a New convenant. Which fulfilled the intention of the Old Convenant. Among human beings, the most important relationship is blood relationship. Apart from blood relationship is the covenant relationship. Marriage is a covenant relationship between a man and a woman. Religion is a covenant relationship between God and man. Thus, our relationship with God is a covenant relationship. This relationship is based on love, trust and obedience. Therefore, our knowledge of the covenant relationship teaches us to always have a meaningful relationship with God and Jesus Christ, based on love, trust and obedience. **The Significance of the Call of Abram** By calling Abram, God took the initiative to enter into a new relationship with him, and through him to all mankind. Abram's iimmediate response to the call shows his obedience to the Word of God. Abram's obedience was the result of his Faith in the word of God, and His promises. From the faith expressed by Abram, we learn the significant fact that Faith, if not accompanied by works, has no meaning in the sight of God. By responding to the call, Abram rejected the old life of Mesopotamia for the new life in the promised land. God's promise to punish those who curse Abram means that all those who oppose God's chosen people would be punished. The promise Also shows the universality of God, since all mankind would be blessed through Abram and Hus descendants. On another level, the Call of Abram is significant in that God has not stopped calling people into His service. In other words, God still continues to call people into His service today, just as he called Abram in Old Testament times. God calls people in different ways and in different circumstances into His service. Some are called either through visions, when the person sees Himself or herself being called by God, or through dreams, when the person is asleep. Some are called through a divine message which may come from a man of God. Some are called when something remarkable occur in their lives. When there is deliverance from accident, misfortune or from evil forces, people are known to have ddedicated themselves thereafter to the services of God. God can also call us through our training or education. By virtue of his training, a doctor for example may feel himself called by God to help reduce the suffering of people in the world. As we grow up, God will call us to His service. In whatever form, or in whatever circumstances the call comes, we are to make immediate response to the call and thereafter dedicate our lives to the service of God. With such dedication in faithfulness and obedient trust, we will be helping to make the world a far better place to live in than before. **Things to learn** A. Everlasting Care For God's People To care for someone is to provide for his or her well-being. It is to ensure that the spiritual, moral and material needs of the person are provided through proper guidance, adequate protection and the ample supply of physical needs. Guidance has to do with sound religious education and moral instruction such that the person grows up to be a responsible and contented citizen. Protection has to do with sheltering someone from any kind of danger or harm. It has also to do with divine protection against unforseen circumstances. The physical needs have to do with the provision of basic requirements such as shelter, food and clothing. God's relationship with the Israelites in the wilderness period, when they were on their way to the promised land, illustrates how God cares for His people. God guided them and protected them from all harm and danger. God provided for their physical needs so that they lacked nothing during the whole period in the wilderness. At Sinai, God ensured their spiritual and moral guidance by giving them the law-the Commandments. Gods care is an expression of His love for man. Man's duty is to reciprocate this loving care by doing God's will at all times. **Significance of God's Guidance & Protection** God showed His loving care for the children of Israel by guiding and protecting them from their enemies in their time of greatest need. The Israelites reacted favourably to God's guidance and protection. They feared God. They now believed in Him as their guidian and protector. They also believed in Moses and had full confidence in his leadership. The lesson is that God is always at hand to guide and protect us from harm and danger at all times and under all circumstances. Therefore as Christians, we should always put our trust in God tobguide and protect us. By doing the will of God, As revealed to us Jesus Christ. We learn more about how Hod guides us spiritually and morally and protects us from all harm and danger. Thus, we must endeavour to study the Bible daily to ensure God's guidance and protection for us from day to day. **The Significance of God's Provision for His People** God provided food and water for the Israelites to show that He cares for the basic needs of men, in addition to their spiritual and moral needs. He is the greatest provider who provides for all our needs even when we have not asked Him. In the two instances where God provided food and water for the Israelites, they complained bitterly and murmured against Him. This showed lack of faith in God's providential care. But, God is patient and long-suffering. He endured their ingratitude and lack of faith. The lesson is that we must never doubt God's ability to provide for our needs. We must notbbe impatient with Him. We must learn to endure patiently till God provide for our needs. **Lessons to learn** A. God was at hand to guide and protect the Israelites. B. This means God is always at hand to guide and protect us. C. We should learn to put pur trust in God to guide and protect us in all circumstances **Summary of the significances** A. God provides for His people in times of Great need. B. God is long-suffering in that He endured the impatience of the people and supplied their needs. From this, we learn to wait patiently for the Lord to supply our needs. C. The murnuring and grumbling of the people showed their lack of faith in God to bring them safely to the promised land. Are You Thirsty? *Text: Psa. 143: 6 * “I lift my hands to you in prayer. I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain” (NLT) Are you thirsty? Ask anyone that question today and one of the likely response you will get is: “Thirsty for what? What they are telling you indirectly through that response is that the answer to your question depends on what it is you have in mind as the object of the thirst. Is it thirst for water? Thirst for a cold drink? Thirst for a good husband or a good wife? Thirst for financial breakthrough or success in business? All these are examples of things that people can be thirsty for in the physical or worldly realm. Out text for today however talks about a different kind of thirst, it is a kind of thirst that is spiritual in nature, it is a thirst for God. This is not the only psalm where the psalmist has expressed his deep thirst for God, earlier in Psa. 42: 1-2, he said “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?” Why this thirst for God? This thirst for God is coming from a heart that knows that only God can satisfy the deep longings of man. Only in God can all our needs in life be truly and fully met. Unlike many people today who are busy running from pillar to post looking for man to do for them that which only God can do for them, the psalmist has come to realize that God is all that he needs to have all his needs met and he, just like every other person was a needy man. Though some may hide it, trying to pretend as though they have no need whatsoever, the truth is that everyone living has one need or the other. Some are in trouble and need someone to bring them out. Some are in dire need of success in their business and they need someone to help. Some are seriously sick and in need of financial help to get treatment or in need of organ donation. The ways and means by which we all go about solving our problems differs from one person to another. Some consult fellow human beings like them whom they think are well positioned to help them, some consult herbalist and spiritualist who will help connect them to the world of demons and strange spirits. All these means however will only waste time and lead to greater complication of the problem. The Almighty God is the one stop solution to every problem or trouble that may come the way of man. You need not look elsewhere, because there is no one else that can be compared to Him, no one is equal to Him in power to meet your needs. The psalmist realize this and that is the reason for his thirst for God. He seeks audience with God, he knows that if only he can appear before God, all his problems will receive the desired solution. Prayer is the means by which the psalmist quenches his thirst for God. Through the weapon of prayer, he is able to come into fellowship with God, pour out his heart to Him and wait for answer from heaven. You also can and should do same, look up to God alone and not man, and so thirst for His presence and take advantage of the weapon of prayer to quench your thirst and to get your needs met. You Have All You Need *Text: 2 Pet. 1: 3 * “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence” (NLT) Our God is powerful, the bible declares that power belongs to Him – “God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God” (Psa. 62: 11). God through His power accomplishes much in our life. Through the greatness of His power enemies submit to us (Psa. 66: 3), through His power we receive inner strength for service and our text adds to the list of what the power can do, it says that through the power of God we have everything we need for living a godly life. One of the major demand of God from all His children is that we must be holy just as He is holy (1 Pet. 1: 16). Knowing that God will not place any demand on His children without first making provision to ensure that they have what it takes to meet the demand, it is not surprising that we get this assurance from the scriptures. God knows that we can never by our power fulfil His desire for us to be holy or to live godly lives and so He made the necessary provision for us. At salvation, He programmed into our lives all that we need to live godly lives in this world thereby bringing glory to Him. Having made this provision for us therefore, no child of God has any justification whatsoever not to live godly in this world. Today people including Christians are full of excuses why they are unable to live right. They say that the world is too corrupt and that corruption is everywhere and this corruption is so strong that it makes it practically impossible to live godly, some say that the level of sexual perversion in the world is so bad that it is difficult for anyone with blood in his veins to be free. All these however is not true, but a grand deception from hell to keep Christians away from living godly lives. The truth is that no matter how morally bankrupt the world may have become or the level of corruption and ungodliness in the world, those who belong to God and desire to be godly can still do so conveniently because God’s provision for them will adequately empower them to do so, if they want to. You do not have to live a life of compromise, you do not have to struggle with sin anymore, you can conveniently resist the pressure to do wrong and instead live right. It all depends on you, if you really want to. That temptation need not overcome you, if you don’t want to fall into it, you need not succumb to that pressure to accept or to give bribe, you can be different in a good way. Like the apostle Paul affirmed, you can say “No” to ungodliness and worldly lust and instead live soberly and righteously in this world (Titus 2: 12). To do this however you must break away from every ungodly influence around your life, it is an ungodly yoke and the bible warns against that, telling us to come out from among them and be separate (2 Cor. 6: 17). You must then begin to take your stand against all ungodliness around you and embrace godliness instead trusting God and His word, and you will become a light for God in your world. Empowered With Inner Strength *Text: Eph. 3: 16* “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit” (NKJV) Physical strength is good because it gives us ability to work. And the bible commands that he that does not work must not eat (2 Thess. 3: 10). Physical strength helps us to move around and to live an effective and an impactful life. Weakness is the absence of strength and it is not something that is desirable. When someone is physically weak, such a person lacks physical strength and oftentimes such people become a liability, an additional burden to those who are physically strong. Apart from physical strength we also have emotional strength and this promotes mental stability and also stability of the mind. Emotional strength helps people to remain calm in frightful and alarming situations. It helps one to remain rational, clear headed and in control with ability to take necessary decisions in moments of great unrest and fear. For instance when the COVID 19 pandemic broke out early this year, it created a lot of panic and fear and many lost ability to think rationally and to take necessary decisions that will help them and their families navigate their way through the pandemic, some became hospitalized and died not because they were infected with the virus but due to fear which led to depression and high blood pressure for some. Emotionally strong people will fare better in such situations compared to those who are weak emotionally. Beyond physical and emotional strength however is what our text today describes as inner strength and a more common word for that is spiritual strength. Physical strength is good, emotional strength is better but spiritual strength is best. One of the reason for this is because spiritual strength is God-given, that is, it is from above and that which is from above is above all (John 3: 31). Spiritual strength is a measure or a dose of God’s strength made available to men. It is physical strength and emotional strength combined together and much more. It is a necessary attribute that we must have if we are going to be able to successfully take our stand against the devil, the world and the flesh because its primary purpose is to empower us to do just that. Do you feel as though the devil, the world and the flesh has formed a collabo, a satanic trinity of some sort against your life? Are you heavily under pressure from the devil, the world and flesh to compromise your faith and to embrace unrighteousness in one form or another? The strength you need to overcome is not without, it is within and it is fully available to you as long as you are a child of God. Stand in the place of prayer therefore child of God and place a demand for this inner strength, God makes it available to you through His Spirit that dwells within you and your victory is sure. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Father thank you that as your child I am not weak, because you have made inner strength available to me. 2. Father thank you for the physical and the emotional strength that is available to me through this inner strength. 3. Father, Samson was a man of extra-ordinary strength but at some point due to sin , he lost his strength, I will never lose my inner strength, it will never fail in my life in Jesus name 4. Father with this inner strength, I take my stand against the devil and his agents, they will not prevail over me anymore in Jesus name 5. Father by reason of this inner strength, I stand faith, I stand in righteousness and I maintain my stand as your child to the end of my life’s journey in Jesus name. Amen

New Life In Christ *Text: 2 Cor. 5: 17* *This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT) One of the uniqueness of the Christian faith is that it is a faith that demands death as a necessary entry qualification. All those who desire to come into the Christian faith must die to sin, must die to self, must die to the flesh and must die to the old life before they can be qualified to come into the faith, failure to do so makes them a poor imitation of a true Christian. The implication of this is that the life of a Christian is not a continuation of his old life but the start of an entirely new life that should have no trace of the old. The Old life is characterized by various sinful practices, and negatives traits such as malice, envy, pride, greed, lustful tendencies, sinful addictions and so on. It is a life that is the direct opposite of a holy life which is the demand of a Holy God. It is totally impossible to offer any meaningful service to God with our old life, such a service cannot be acceptable to God no matter the effort we put into it. And that is the unfortunate situation that many find themselves today. They are serving God but they are serving Him in their old life. They hold position in the church, they are in the church choir, they are among the stewards, they are lay ministers, they are in one church committee or another, but outside the church they still patronize drinking joints, they are still involved in extra marital affairs, they are very dishonest in the way they conduct their business. In short they are living a double life, they are the direct opposite of who they claim to be in the church, such people are only wasting their time serving in the church because their service is not recognized by God. In fact they are a problem to the church because they give the church a bad name outside amongst unbelievers and this is a major reason why God is angry with them. The bibles assures us that we can only deceive men we cannot deceive God, God knows those who are is (2 Tim. 2: 19-21) and they are those who have jettisoned their old life and embraced the new life in Christ. They are the ones that God is committed to blessing, they are the ones that can expect God to answer whenever they call on Him. Many are very attracted to their old life and are unwilling to give it up, this reluctance to give up the old life is the reason why many have refused to be genuinely saved, choosing rather to combine the old with the new, Jesus however explained that this is impossible and any attempt to do this will have disastrous consequences (Luke 5: 36-38), though He also acknowledged the fact that many are unwilling to drop their old life for the new because they believe that the old is better (Luke 5: 39), but they have no choice but to drop their old life if they desire to be on the right side of God. Contrary to the thinking of many, the new life actually is far better than the old, the old life ultimately leads to hell, while the new life leads to eternal life with God in heaven. Think about it, which will you prefer? I pray that God will grant you grace to make the right choice. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Revelation Through The Light *Text: Luke 2: 32* “A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.” (NKJV) Jesus Christ came to the world as light to lighten our darkness. The bible tells us that the whole world lies under the power of the wicked one (1 John 5: 19), which is another way of saying that the whole world lies under the power of darkness. So the coming of Jesus as Light into the world is to shed light into this dark world thereby giving light to mankind and bringing deliverance to as many as those who wish to be free from the bondage of darkness. This was the reason why Jesus encountered so much opposition right from the time of His birth till His death, because the darkness in the world tried very hard to resist His coming and to stop Him from the fulfillment of His mission but it failed woefully. Describing the resistance of the world to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, Apostle John put it this way in his version of the gospel: “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3: 19). The good news however is that the Light could not be resisted successfully, the bible says that the Light triumphed over every opposition and eventually came and shown in all its radiance right in the midst of darkness and darkness was unable to overcome it. Alleluia!! Many of us may be passing through situations which I call "darkness" but God Almighty, "the light" will bring solutions to your problem. When light shines, darkness donnot comprehend. What does this mean? It means that there can be any form of darkness when a light shines. Its not possible at all. Can you see light and darkness at the same time nmin a particular place? The answer is no! His revelation indeed brings light which is the salvation you and I need to prosper as Christians here on earth. Have you given your life to Christ? If no, please do so, so that his unfailing light will be upon you and you shall glow brightly forever. The Lord is our strength, fortress and stronghold. With him, all things are made possible for those that believe. Through this Light therefore, deliverance from darkness became available to all those who came to the Light and submitted fully to it. The bible assures us that all those who surrender to this Light have now been transported away from the kingdom of darkness into God’s kingdom of light (Col. 1: 13) Apart from salvation and deliverance from darkness, this Light also brings revelation and all those who submits to the Light freely benefit from this. The secret operation of the devil in their lives and families is revealed, leading to deliverance from long standing chains, foundational issues and other hidden problems that has been the underlying reason behind afflictions, trials and various complications encountered in life. The revelation referred to in this text also includes fresh knowledge and understanding about God and His ways which was hitherto hidden from us. Furthermore, this Light gives us fresh insight in God’s word, our understanding of the word of God becomes heavily enhanced and we gain greater and better understanding of the things of the spirit. The Light of God in us makes all these and much more happen for us and as we continue to walk in the Light so we increase in these things, our paths is forever lighted and we are able to serve as a light of God in a world under the firm grip of darkness. This light of God in your life will never die in Jesus name. Shalom. Prayer Point 1. Inspiration In The Word *Text: 2Tim. 3:16-17* “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (NLT) The scriptures undoubtedly was written by men, but that does not make it the words of men, rather it is the word of God. This simple truth is what is revealed to us in our text for today’s devotional. “All scriptures” means “All scriptures”, no part of the scriptures is left out, and every part of it is God breathed. Now this does not imply that all the words spoken in the scriptures were spoken by God, neither does it imply that every opinion expressed in scriptures is agreeable to God, but it does mean that God allowed it to be part of scripture and it is for a reason. In putting the scriptures together, the Lord permitted some individual opinion expressed by people to be documented, he allowed the actions of some people to be documented even though it was wrong. For instance the friends of Job expressed some personal opinion about God that was wrong, God Himself said so (Job 42: 7), yet God allowed room for such opinion to be accommodated in the scriptures, because even in those false opinions and actions the Lord through His Spirit is passing a message to us His children. The same text reveals to us the purpose of scripture, it says that it teaches us what is right to do and what is wrong that we must avoid. Life is about rights and wrongs. There are things that are right for us to do in order for us to be in the will of God and to prosper and there are things that are wrong that will take us outside God’s will and make God to turn against us. The scriptures reveals these thing to us and so when we obey the scriptures and live our lives in full compliance to what it says then we are set to succeed in all our endeavors, this was exactly God’s counsel to Joshua (Jos. 1: 8). The scriptures is also a book of correction, it corrects us when we are wrong and tend to stir us along the right path. When we subject ourselves to its teaching therefore the scriptures will not only keep us away from the path of error but will also help those who are walking the wrong path to navigate their way away from the wrong path to the right path. And finally from that text, the scriptures is God’s tool which He uses to prepare and equip us His children to do the good work that He has purposed for us to do. How then do we benefit from and take proper advantage of all these treasures contained in the scriptures? There are four things we need to do with the scriptures in order for us to take full advantage of what it offers – first we need to read it, secondly we need to study it, thirdly we need to memorize it and fourthly we must memorize it. It is important that we take time to engage the scriptures in these four ways if we are to fully take advantage of its content and what it offers. The scriptures is your road map to a life of fulfillment here on earth and also your road map to eternal life with God in heaven. Stay connected to it. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father please grant me grace to stay obedient to your word and to take heed to its warning in Jesus name 3. Father please help me to take advantage of the provisions you have made in the scriptures to properly equip myself to do the good work you have ordained for me to do in Jesus name 5. Father I receive grace to engage the scriptures in the four ways listed above so that I can take full advantage of its benefit for my life in Jesus name.

Temptation: There Is A Way Out Is there actually a way out of being tempted to do evil? Have you being tempted before to do something that was not good? What was your response to that? All these will be discussed properly here And do well to read, understand and finally, remain blessed. *Text: 1 Cor. 10: 13* “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” Temptations. Have you ever wondered how life will be without them? Inability to say “No” to temptations is the reason why some are yet to turn away from sin and accept God’s offer of salvation. They are yet to develop enough courage and strength of character to turn away from the temptation that confronts them daily in their place of work or from other sources. Even among professing believers many have remained stagnant and unable to make any meaningful progress in their Christian life due to the fact that they are still struggling with one temptation or another. Our text today has some information for us about temptation and this information undoubtedly will help us in our effort to overcome temptation and to live a life of holiness unto the Lord. The first thing it tells us is that the temptation that confronts us is not peculiar to us. It is not something strange or uncommon, other Christians and non-Christians alike are experiencing the same thing. The implication of this is that some other people have encountered the same temptation and they overcame, we also therefore can overcome. The second thing the text tells us about temptation is that God in is faithfulness filters every temptation that comes to us and will not allow any temptation that is beyond what we are able to bear to come to us. So whatever temptation you are going though now was allowed by God to come to you because He knows that you have ability to bear it. The challenge is that we on our own do not usually feel that we are able to bear the temptation, in some cases under intense temptation we feel overwhelmed and it seem that we are unable to cope. But this is where we have to trust God, if He says we can then we can, if the temptation successfully passed through His filter meaning that we can bear it, then we must trust him regardless of how we feel that indeed, we can bear it. Thirdly, our text tells us that for every temptation that comes our way, there is a way of escape. We may not see it but it is there, because the scriptures says so, we can either choose to believe or doubt the word of God, but it is wisdom for us to believe. Because the word of God will not lie, if it says that there is a way of escape then believe, if you don’t see the way immediately ask God to reveal it to you and He will. These information revealed about temptation in this text, tells us one thing which is that, no temptation can overcome us unless we choose for the temptation to overcome us. For every temptation that comes our way if we fight it relying on the information revealed in this text, then we will be overcomers every time. You are most welcome to the month of October. Praise be to the Almighty God who has graciously preserved and guided you such that you are able to gloriously enter into this month. May this month be a month of great moves and great acts of God in your life and family. May God's grace of protection and preservation journey with you throughout this month in Jesus name. May The healing hands of the Lord be upon your household in this new month. You shall know no sorrow this October. It is well with you. Promotion is your portion. Seeking God’s Approval *Text: 2 Tim. 2: 15* “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth” Many people today will do anything, will go to any extent and do whatever is necessary to secure the approval of men but will care very little about securing God’s approval. A major reason for this is because they are convinced that their lifting, their wellness, their promotion in life is in the hands of men. This certainly is not true, the truth is that nobody can do anything for you unless God permits it. Man may propose to do things for you, but if God does not approve of it, they may propose all they want and may actually be sincere in their intentions, but it will not work. The scriptures says that every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1: 17), scriptures also says that no one can receive anything unless it comes from heaven (John 3: 27), so seeking God’s approval should not be an option but a necessity because it is when He approves of us that He can be positively disposed towards us – to bless us and to generally look upon us with favor. Our text is an admonition on what we need to do in order to secure God’s approval. The very first thing to note here is that lazy people will not be able to secure God’s approval. God can never be pleased with people who are lazy and the scriptures in various places warns against laziness and also reveals to us the dangers in being lazy. Whoever seeks God’s approval must be hard working in that which has been committed into his hands whether in the secular or spiritual realm. Christians who have a reputation in their place of work as lazy can never secure the approval of God. Such workers surely should be ashamed of themselves because they are an embarrassment to God, but workers who are hardworking, and diligent in their work have no need to be ashamed either before men or before God, scriptures says that they will stand before kings (Prov. 22: 29). Secondly to seek God’s approval you must have a sound understanding of God’s word to the point that you are able to correctly apply it in your daily living. This implies of course that you must be committed to consistent engagement of God’s word because understanding is built upon knowledge, you need to first know what the word says for you understand it and then be able to rightly apply it. Many are manipulating and mutilating the word of God to appease their personal ego and to further their selfish, ungodly agenda, such people of course cannot expect to obtain God’s approval. Some take a lot of time in searching scriptures in search of scriptural passages that they can use to give some form of legitimacy to their ungodly lifestyle by twisting it to suit their purpose. This will definitely not secure approval for anyone before God. Therefore your attitude to the responsibilities committed into your hands and your attitude to God’s word are the two determinants that will determine your standing with God. Work Smarter & Not Harder *Text: Eccl. 10: 10* “Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.” People work hard today and yet they remain unsuccessful and oftentimes when you ask them for an explanation for this lack of success, the general believe seem to be that, they are not working hard enough, even some of these people themselves seem to be of the opinion that if only they can work harder, work more jobs, put in more time in their work they will make it, and so they make themselves available to work overtime in their place of work, they engage themselves in more jobs all in a bid to achieve financial comfort and to succeed but at the end all their effort still fails to yield the desired results. It did not occur to them that perhaps the problem is not that they are not working harder, it could just be instead that they are not working smart. Our texts paints the picture of a perfect example of someone who is working hard but not working smart. Imagine using a dull to axe to cut a tree, apart from the fact that it involves a lot of hard work and also a lot of time will be spent, you may not be successful in cutting the tree because at some point fatigue will set in and you will not be able to continue. Those who see you working so hard may commend you that you are hardworking but unfortunately it is hard work that will not produce the desired result even after a lot of time has been spent. Regardless of all his efforts and energy expended in such a fruitless exercise the worker will be described as a foolish worker because what the wise worker will have done differently will be to sharpen the axe first and then you will find that with less effort and less energy expended the desired goal will be achieved. So hard work is good, laziness is definitely an attribute that anyone who seek to succeed in life must avoid, but hard work alone will not lead to success or financial freedom, you also need to learn to work smart as well. Working smart involves looking to see the opportunities around you and taking advantage of them, it involves learning new and better ways of doing your job and using those ways to your advantage, it involves being humble enough to learn from others what they are doing better than you that has made them succeed in the same labor where you have failed, it involves taking the necessary steps to learn and fully understand a business before plunging into it, rather than just going into a business because you see that others are doing it and they seem to be succeeding. Are you working hard or working smart, which is it? The right answer to that question can deliver you from years of fruitless hard work and firmly position you on the path of success and financial freedom. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Pray, Believe & Receive *Text: Mark 11: 24* “I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” Prayer is powerful. It can literally move mountains. That is exactly what our Lord Jesus said will happen when a believer prays with faith. Such a person can command the mountain to move into the sea, and it will happen. Jesus promised us that we will receive whatever we ask for in prayer, as long as we believe. The Lord explained that it glorifies the Father to answer our prayers. So, what can we receive in prayer? In prayer we can receive anything we believe is possible. In other words, our faith is the only condition to our prayer. We should never base our prayers on the circumstances around us, but on the power and the character of God. That is why the scripture tells us that we walk by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5: 7). When we pray for difficult situations, or situations that looks impossible, we should not be discouraged by what we see, because as God’s children we do not walk by what we see, rather we walk by what we believe. Sometimes the answer might take longer to come than we expect, yet we need to persevere in prayer. Jesus spoke about this in the Gospels. He said that at times we need to pray about something persistently, day and night, because God will answer us as long as we do not lose faith. What can we pray persistently about? Anything consistent with the character and the will of God. The scripture also warns us that we can pray amiss if our prayer is motivated by selfish ambition. For example, prayers about us winning the lottery, so that others would envy our fortune, or about a coworker getting fired, because we are angry with them fall into this category. In cases like the scenarios listed above, our requests contradict God’s character. When we pray, we need to surrender our will to God’s. Then, we will discover the good, pleasing and perfect will of God for us and our circumstances. Even Jesus had to submit His will to the Father’s will in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. Christ knew how much He will suffer on the cross. He was honest with the Father and asked Him if the cup of suffering could possibly be taken away from Him. Christ concluded His prayer, however by saying, “Not My will, but Yours be done”. When we submit our will to the Father’s will, we can experience the immense power of prayer. A righteous person’s prayer is powerful because it reflects the will and the heart of the Almighty God. Nothing is impossible for such prayer. Therefore when we pray aright and in total conformity with the will of God, all we need do is to believe in Him and we shall receive whatever we have asked. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Godly Sorrow VS Worldly Sorrow *Text: 2 Cor. 7: 10* “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death” Generally nobody likes to be sorrowful, because sorrow is associated with bad things, things that makes people sad, things that bring pain to people – physical and emotional pain. For instance the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one – a wife/husband, a child, parents, the loss of a desired opportunity, misfortune, bad news. These are examples of situations that will make people to be sorrowful and nobody prays for any of these things, though they happen all the same whether we desire them or not and when they do, they come with sorrow There is however a different type of sorrow, another word for this type of sorrow is remorse, it means to be sorry for a wrong that was committed. If for instance you accuse someone wrongly and you later find out that the person actually is innocent of what you accused him of, naturally you will be sorrowful or remorseful and often times you seek to right the wrong you committed by apologizing to the person, telling him/her that you are sorry for what you did. This is the type of sorrow that the apostle Paul was talking about in this passage. Apostle Paul apparently had written a third letter to the Corinthians, it was a rather harsh letter that sternly rebuked them for certain things that had gone wrong in the church which he expected them to correct. The letter was so strongly worded that the apostle Paul by his own testimony said that he initially was sorrowful or remorseful that he wrote the letter, but later he became glad that he wrote the letter seeing that the letter produced desired results in the church. The result is that the letter made the believers sorrowful for their action and repented of it. Now it was not the fact that the letter made them sorrowful that gladdened the heart of Apostle Paul, but the fact that the sorrow led them to repentance and the apostle Paul described this type of sorrow that leads to repentance as godly sorrow. There is another type of sorrow however that does not produce repentance, this is the type of sorrow that Judas Iscariot had when the implication of his role in the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus Christ dawned on him. Scripture tells us that he was sorry for what he did and actually returned the money he was paid back to the Jewish leaders who refused to collect the money from him, but unfortunately his sorrow rather than lead him to repentance led him instead to commit suicide and that granted him express passage to hell. Apostle Paul described this type of sorrow as worldly sorrow. It is not enough to be sorry or to be sorrowful for living in sin or living a life of disobedience to God. It is not enough to be sorry that you have been an unfaithful husband or unfaithful wife to your spouse. It is not enough to be sorrowful that you have been dishonest in your business dealings. If you just stop at that level, then that type of sorrow is worldly sorrow and it will only produce death as it did for Judas Iscariot. But the sorrow must lead to repentance. You have seen the errors of your ways and you are sorry for the pain you have caused, but you must not stop there, you must take a step forward by repenting of the wrong you have done and taking necessary steps to make amends and to make your way right. This is godly sorrow and it leads to life. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father I thank you for your willingness and readiness to forgive whenever there is genuine sorrow and repentance for wrongs committed. Thank you for making me a beneficiary of this grace 2. Father thank you for lifting the burden of sin off my life and for giving me a new life in Christ Jesus 3. Father help me never to be comfortable walking or living in unrighteousness in Jesus name 4. Father it is your will that I live right before you, please grant me grace to do so in Jesus name 5. Father please deliver me from any decision or any part that will lead me to hell in Jesus name.

Love That Conquers Fear *Text: 1 John 4: 18* “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” Our anchor text reveals to us that love is an antidote to fear and the question that comes to mind immediately is what type of love is this? According to 1 John 4: 7, this is the love that proceed from God into the lives of those who surrenders to Him and accept His offer of adoption to become His son. If you read downward from 1 John 4: 7, this loves manifest itself in our life as brotherly love. The manifestation of this love in our hearts is one of the genuine proof in our life that we are genuinely and truly born again. And that is the major message of the Apostle John in this passage that if we are truly born again, the love of God will flow into us and become resident in us and that love will manifest in our relationships with other believers. There is no one that is truly born again that will walk in hatred because this love is strong enough to overcome bitterness and hate that may have existed in our hearts in the past. Building on this argument, the author of this epistle reveals in our text a major feature or peculiarity of this God kind of love, which is that this love has capacity to cast out fear. It cannot co-exist with fear and so when it comes into our lives it cast out fear. Fear of uncertainty in our walk with God, fear regarding the final outcome of our life here on earth, fear of what might be the likely consequences of our new found relationship with God – that is, the fear of persecution, fear of trials and fear of the unknown and even the fear of death. Whatever may be the fear that has held us captive for years the moment we surrender our lives to Jesus, God becomes our Father, His love flows into our lives and conducts a deliverance session on us to rid our lives of the spirit of fear that as held us captive. According to our text, the true test that we have the love of God in us therefore is that we become free from fear and in place of fear we receive boldness and confidence to serve the Lord, to do His will and to walk before Him all the days of our life (2 Tim. 1: 7). Fear is alien to the child of God, it is to be found in the unrighteous and the wicked, it is the character of genuine children of God to be bold, boldness as a result of the love of God that is resident in us (Prov. 28: 1) Are you living in bondage to fear? Fear as a result of the present dangers that surround us, fear of what the future holds, fear of death or fear of the afterlife. Jesus can take away your fears and break its hold over your life. He has promised to grant rest to all those who will come to Him (Matt. 11: 28), and so when you surrender to Him, He will grant you rest from fear. If you claim to have surrendered your life to Him and yet you are still in bondage to fear, out text says that is evidence that you are yet to experience the fullness of His perfect love. Totally surrender your life and everything you hold dearly to Him, fully trust Him and you will see Him transform your life totally, all your fears will disappear and you will be totally free. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father, I thank you for your love that flowed into my life when I surrendered my life to you as my Lord 2. Thank you Father for not just loving me but also giving me the capacity to genuinely love others 3. Father I have been born of you and so hatred has no place in my life, I therefore command every seed of hatred to die in my life in Jesus name 4. Father by reason of your love in my life, fear has no place in my life and so I reject every trace of fear in my life in Jesus name 5. Father in place of fear I receive the spirit of boldness and confidence to serve you and to do your will completely in Jesus name.

God Our Comforter *Text: 2 Cor. 7: 5-6* “For indeed, when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were troubled on every side. Outside were conflicts, inside were fears. Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus” In a world of trouble, chaos and unrest like ours, comfort is not a luxury but a necessity. Especially for us as children of God in our pursuit to live right, to make a positive impact in our world and to contribute our quota to make our world a better place there will be so much to do and so little time to do it, and so rest will be a scarce commodity. There also will be all manner of trouble and hostility from those who are opposed to the good we are trying to do, in some cases the trouble will be life threatening and so will lead to fear. All of this is enough to lead to frustration and an abandonment of the vision if comfort and encouragement is absent. This was the experience of the apostle Paul in his quest to take the gospel to the unreached in Macedonia. According to him, he and his co-travelers had no rest and they were troubled on every side, the conflicts and the fears could have made them him abandon the assignment but for the fact that God arranged for them to be comforted and encouraged through the visit of Titus. The apostle described God as the one who comforts the downcast. This implies that it is part of God’s nature to bring comfort and encouragement to His children whenever there is the need for it. So what God did for the apostle Paul, He can do for us as well, He can arrange for us to be comforted and encouraged whenever we are downcast. To be downcast is to be depressed, to be brought low by the situation or issues of life, to suffer setback, to be demoted, to be afflicted. There is always a rich supply of things that can make one to be downcast in this world and sooner or later we shall be confronted with some of them. We can however take consolation in the fact that when we are confronted with situations or issues that will tend to make us become downcast, we are not alone, God is with us and He will work out a way to bring comfort and encouragement to us, so that we can remain focused on the assignment He has committed into our hands. God’s comfort and encouragement gives lasting peace, rest and renewed vigor to pursue the actualization of His purpose in our lives. And so whatsoever may be your situation right now – maybe you are downcast, you are perplexed due to the fact that you are surrounded by troubles, look up to God today for comfort and encouragement, prayerfully engage His word, He will not disappoint you, He will send His word of comfort to you. Shalom. 1. Father you are the God of all comfort, I give you praise for the comfort you send to me over and over again to encourage me daily 2. Father, regardless of what I might be going though even at this moment, I refuse to be discouraged, I will not be depressed in Jesus name 3. Father I stand in prayer against every satanic agenda to trouble my rest, it shall not stand in Jesus name 4. Father, as I journey on in this life, I will not be brought low, by your grace, I will continue to climb higher and higher in Jesus name 5. Father, please surround me comforters, I receive your lasting peace, your rest and fresh vigor from you to pursue the actualization of my purpose in life in Jesus name.

Do Not Overcome By Evil *Text: Rom. 12: 20-21* “Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” The hunger for revenge is great whenever we have been hurt by someone. There is always that strong urge to want to hurt the person back. Our text this morning describes such attitude as evil and warns us against it. The world we live in is a wicked world, where people actually delight in doing evil. It is a world where people hurt their fellow human being without feeling any remorse or guilt. Some are so established in wickedness that they don’t even count their action as wickedness. As a result of these alarming level of wickedness in the world, many have been hurt and many are hurting presently due to acts of wickedness meted out to them. And so there is a strong urge for revenge whenever the opportunity presents itself. Many in the world believe that revenge is sweet and will gladly welcome the day when they will have the opportunity to revenge the wicked acts done to them in the past. For us as Christians however we are not to retaliate or revenge wicked acts done to us, rather when the opportunity presents itself we are to show love and kindness to persons who have acted wickedly towards us, by so doing, according to our text, we are using good to overcome evil. This admonition no doubt is easier said than done because when people hurt us, the natural reaction is to want to hurt them back when we get the chance, but when we do that then we are no different from the people of the world and we are no different also from these people who hurt us in the first place. When we avenge wickedness done to us we prove that we are no different from those who acted wickedly towards us, that is, we also are wicked as well and this certainly does not speak well of us as followers of Christ. Secondly our text reveals to us that contrary to what the devil has deceived many to believe, we are not helpless against the tendency to do evil, we have a choice in the matter and we can choose not to. When the bible says “ Do not ……”, the implication is that we have the power to allow or not to allow, we have the power to succumb to the pressure to do evil and we also have the power not to succumb, the choice is ours to make. This is true not only in the case of vengeance but in all other cases when we are tempted to act contrary to God’s word. We have a choice we are not helpless, no one should therefore put up the defence that he was helpless as an excuse for wrongs or wicked acts committed. Are you under pressure to revenge a wicked act done to you? Are you presently being tempted to walk the path of evil, remember you have a choice, you can say “No” and you can choose instead to walk in love and in obedience to God’s word. When you do so, you have overcome evil with good and heaven will be proud of you. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father you are a forgiving God, thank you for forgiving me, thank you for not counting my wrong against me. 2. Father please teach me to learn to forgive others for wrong done to me even when I think that they do not deserve to be forgiven 3. Father may the thirst or desire in me for vengeance die permanently in Jesus name 4. Father I am not helpless, I can say “No” to the tendency to do evil, help me O Lord always to stand against and to resist any temptation to carry out evil in Jesus name. 5. Lord I turn permanently away from the path of evil and choose to walk the path of love and obedience to your word in Jesus name.

Work Towards Holiness *Text: 2 Cor.7: 1* “Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” It is our responsibility to ensure that we are holy, no one will do this for us. People have believed for too long that it is God that will do something about the uncleanness, the imperfections and generally the sin in their lives, the truth however is that God will not do anything about it, if you do not do something about it. Through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, we can now be cleansed from every uncleanness and other sin and we can now be empowered to live a life of holiness unto the Lord. But Jesus will not just come into our lives and begin to sweep away uncleanness, we will need to first invite him into our life, reject all that is unclean and ungodly and ask for His help to make us clean and holy before the Lord. The same text gave an indication that there is a motivation to do this and verses 17 and 18 of the previous chapter reveals to us what this motivation is. It says that if we are able to rid ourselves of all filth and uncleanness then we will attract the presence of God into our lives, He will become our Father and we will be His son or daughter. That certainly is a good enough motivation for us to want to be holy. God is holy and He cannot dwell in a place that is unholy, He will not be associated with unholiness and so holiness is a must if we seek to walk with God and to maintain a healthy Father-son relationship with Him. The steps we need to take to cleanse ourselves of all uncleanness and filthiness is to dissociate ourselves from all works of darkness and from all immoral and ungodly relationships. We should totally turn away from everything that will not promote godliness in our lives, we should also examine the company we keep, those we have around us as friends and if we find their lifestyle to be opposed to godliness then we should stay away from them. The pursuit of holiness requires that we examine very seriously the type of company we keep, the type of TV/Radio programs we watch or listen to and the type of books we read. Whatever will not promote godliness should be totally avoided. God can be your Father and that opens you up to a world of possibilities of unimaginable dimension and most importantly it is only when you have God as your Father that you are guaranteed a place in heaven. God is ready and willing to become your Father, but are you willing to accept Him, the choice is yours. Shalom Prayer Point 1. Father thank you for the provision that you have made for me to be free from sin and to be holy 2. Father I present myself afresh unto you today, please forgive and cleanse me from all acts of uncleanliness and unrighteousness in my life in Jesus name 3. Father in my daily activities, I ask for grace to disconnect from every lifestyle that will promote uncleanliness in my life in Jesus name 4. Father I receive a fresh grace from you today to pursue holiness in my daily activities in Jesus name 5. Lord I accept you fully as my Father, please help me navigate my path, stir me away from every ungodly path and please lead me along the path that leads to heaven in Jesus name.

Lord Have Mercy *Text: Psa. 51: 1-2* “Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin” Psalm 51 is a lesson on how genuine confession of sin is a necessary step to experience the full gift of forgiveness. First, genuine confession acknowledges what we have done to displease God. For genuine confession to count it must be followed by godly sorrow that causes us to genuinely grieve over the pain we have caused God. Secondly, genuine confession accepts whatever judgement God deems necessary. In His infinite wisdom, God knows what we need to keep us from continuing in sin. In His infinite love for us, He will discipline us as severely as necessary to produce holiness in our lives. Third, genuine confession revolves around repentance, around the deep heartfelt desire to turn from our sin. David’s repentant spirit was evident in His desire to be clean within and to be forgiven. He knew that the root of the problem was his depraved sinful nature. He did not just ask for forgiveness, he pleaded with God to wash him within. He earnestly longed to be changed within, so that he would never again commit such hideous sins. The desired product of confession is mercy. We confess our sins so that we can receive mercy. Mercy is God’s prerogative, it is entirely at His discretion. He said He will have mercy upon whom He chooses to have mercy (Rom. 9: 15). But it is also God’s nature to be merciful, so God is full of mercy and He His more than willing to bestow mercy on all who will ask for it. The mercy of God is important, because the mercy of God is God’s assurance to you that He is no longer angry with you, it is God’s assurance that He is looking to favor you and not to judge you, it is assurance that heaven and the forces of heaven are not working against you but are disposed to work for you. The mercy of God is a life changer, there is no one that encounters the mercy of God and remains the same. Apostle Paul’s life will have ended very badly, but he encountered the mercy of God and his story changed for better. The mercy of God is a life preserver, every one of us living today are all products of the mercy of God, the bible says that it is by the mercy of God that we have not been consumed (Lam. 3: 22-23). When it is done rightly confession will also give birth to mercy. Confession if it must be done rightly must be to God, secondly it must be sincere and totally truthful, no distortion of fact and nothing hidden. And then it must be followed by godly sorrow and genuine repentance. These are evidence of a broken spirit and the bible assures that God will not turn away from a broken spirit and a contrite heart (Psa. 51: 17). The mercy of God when released brings healing and a restoration of lost glory. Have you like David fallen into sin? Is there a secret sin in your life? Unconfessed sin will destroy and terminate every good thing that God intends to bring your way but when you confess them, you will have mercy. Lord have mercy upon us in Jesus name. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Father you are the God of mercy, thank you for your act of mercy towards me that secured my salvation from sin 2. No More Condemnation *Text: Rom. 8: 1-2* “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death” To be condemned is to be declared guilty and in a world where we love to trade blames, a lot of guilt is being thrown around. Rather than take responsibility for their actions and their failures, people all over always seek for who to blame and hold responsible even for their own failures. When things go wrong, people are more interested to know who to blame than to know what happened. And so all over the world today people throw condemnation around, they condemn the government for the poor situation of things in the country, they condemn church leaders and ministers for the erosion of godly values in the society, they condemn their spouse for the failure of their marriage or for their failure to raise godly children but in all of this they have no condemnation for themselves, they don’t have any blame in the matter, that is the bubble inside which many live in the world today. People resist and reject condemnation because condemnation is not a good thing, condemnation is bad because it is a prelude to punishment and no one likes punishment. Unfortunately in our world today many have been punished unfairly because they were condemned falsely and were unable to vindicate themselves so they had to suffer the punishment for the wrong. While it is possible for some to claim to be free from condemnation in this world, before God we all are condemned as sinners and the bible says that the wages of sin, that is, the just punishment for sin is death. The whole human race therefore is on death row justly condemned for repeatedly breaking God’s holy law. But for God’s act of mercy through the Lord Jesus Christ, we would have had no hope at all. But thanks be to God who sent His Son to suffer and die and through His death and resurrection we were redeemed, we were justified, to be justified means we were declared not guilty, we were cleared of all charges and we are now free and empowered to serve the Lord. Alleluia!!! We are therefore free from the condemnation of sin and that grace also sets us free from every other condemnation that men or principalities and powers or the devil may wish to lay upon us. “Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.” (Rom. 8: 33). Christ has justified us from all condemnation and in Him we now have grace to live guilt free lives. Praise be to His name. Shalom Prayer Points 1. Love Your Neighbour *Text: I Cor. 13: 1* “If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal” The message of the apostle Paul in this passage is simply that spiritual gift as good and as valuable as it is, is nothing without love. It is a basic truth that many take for granted because they believe that they are already walking in love, yet a close observation of their lifestyle and relationship with others show clearly that love is absent. Any study on the biblical view of love will not be exhaustive if it does not consider the Apostle Paul’s extensive exposition of the subject in 1 Corinthians 13. This passage is very popular and a favorite for many people. Our familiarity with it however can blind us to how short we fall of this standard for love if we are not careful. The kind of love described in 1 Cor. 13 is agape love, God’s unconditional love, God’s own kind of love, which of course is never anything other than perfect. God’s love is always kind, patient, truthful and so forth, manifesting every quality Apostle Paul ascribed to love in his epistle to the Corinthians. Moreover the love of God demonstrates these characteristics flawlessly, unfortunately however, our attempt to love in this manner, never measures up. Why do we find it difficult to express this God kind of love? One of the reason is that we do not make it a priority as it should be. Though it is the chief of all Christian virtues, we often ignore love and use our gifts destructively in the body of Christ, just like the Corinthians did. Jealousy consumes us, and we continually put ourselves ahead of others. Our text teaches us that though we are extraordinarily gifted we gain nothing if we do not have love. Using the gifts of God without showing love to others only proves that we have a serious character flaw that needs urgent attention. Examine yourself now? Do you make love your priority? What is your motivation for the things you do? Is it love or something else? Is it more important for you to be right when you argue with your spouse, or do you seek to treat your spouse with love, no matter what is going on? Jesus Himself says that love for God and neighbor are the most important commandments and that it is on this that the law and prophets depend (Matt. 22: 40). If love is not a priority for you, repent today and take necessary steps to nurture and grow the love of God in your life. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Father thank you for your unconditional love for me and thank you for enriching my life with this type of love. 2. Father, please forgive me for occasions when I have failed to love as I should 3. Father you have called me to love, may every seed of hatred in me die in Jesus name 4. Father let your seed of genuine unconditional love grow in my life in Jesus name 5. The Human Heart *Text: Jer. 17: 9-10* ““The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” Our text this morning reveals to us the condition of the human heart. After careful examination of the human heart, the scriptures return with a very unpleasant and scary verdict. It says the condition of the heart is bad, so bad it is doubtful if we can find anyone outside God who can tell us just how bad it is. No wonder the whole of humanity is in desperate need of a heart transplant and only God can make this happen. Talking about just how bad the human heart is, the bible describes it as “desperately wicked’. It is not just wicked but desperately wicked. I am sure that a lot of us can really relate to that, a lot of us have been victims at one time or the other of the actions of a wicked a heart. We’ve had a taste of just how terribly or desperately wicked the human heart can be. We’ve had trusted relatives, friends and acquaintances who have betrayed our trust in a very painful way and stabbed us in the back. Our Lord Jesus Christ was Himself a victim of a wicked heart in the person of Judas Iscariot. Who was very close to Him and took advantage of that closeness to betray Him to His enemies. There are many who presently are in pain from the poisonous sting of a wicked heart and may not recover in a long while unless God comes through for them. May God deliver us from the venom of a wicked heart in Jesus name. A wicked heart is the reason why many turn away from God and live a life of disobedience and rebellion to Him. It is the reason why many will turn deaf ears to the message of salvation choosing to remain in sin rather than repent and be saved. The problem in marriages, homes and even in the society today is all a product of the wicked heart. Jesus taught His disciples that even families are not insulated from the venom of a wicked heart, He told them that “A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed” (Matt. 10: 21). The world is in a state of turmoil, insecurity and unrest today because the heart of man is wicked. If joy is to return to homes and peace and security is to return to the world then the wickedness in the heart must be addressed. The unfortunate thing in all of this is that even the church is not left out, many in the church today parading themselves as followers of Jesus are nursing a wicked heart within. Some are not genuinely born again and are just living hypocritical lives, some actually are born again but out of carelessness their heart has wandered away from the fold of the Savior and now harbors a lot of evil and ungodly thoughts. This is the reason why God in trying to determine who the true worshippers are does not look on the outward appearance but rather searches the heart, so men may be deceived but God is not deceived. He knows the state of everyone’s heart and will reward accordingly. For those who desire to be free however from a wicked heart and avoid God’s judgement, there is hope for them. God has promised that for all who cry out to Him for help, He will carry out a heart transplant in their lives (Ezek. 36: 26), thereby giving them a heart that will be responsive and submissive to God and His ways. What is the state of your heart? Do you harbor wicked, ungodly and immoral thoughts in your heart? Then you are in serious need of a heart transplant and if you come to God, He will remove the old and give you a brand new heart that will be biased towards doing His will. The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart, examine your heart today. Shalom. Prayer Points 1. Father, I praise you because you are all knowing, you know the real state of our heart and nothing can be hidden from you. 2. Father please examine my heart and remove anything therein that is unacceptable to you in Jesus name 3. Father please deliver me from hardness of heart and give me a heart of flesh, a heart that will be totally responsive to you in Jesus name. 4. Father please deliver me, deliver my household from the assault of a desperately wicked heart in Jesus name 5. Father my heart is your temple, please sanctify it and permanently dwell therein in Jesus name
